Also they changed the awareness a few patches back so they're more resistant to the calls/scent if they hear/smell/see you and are in an alert state. if that happens i've found sitting in place hidden with grey or better visibility bar and not moving for a few minutes gives the animals time to relax and you can call them then.
Also, it depends on the animal's level (not the animal class), the higher the level the more resistant they are to the calls/scents.
Speaking of the HP zones, you're describing how it should work, not how it does. Again it depends on the animal's level. lower level animals you can call in easily into a maxed out HP zone.
Stands/blinds/etc give you 1/3 HP zone eat shot vs not using one. So if you're crouched in a bush and shoot a deer, you get 1 HP lets say. If you're in tree stand, tripod, blind, etc. you have to kill 3 animals for 1 HP. That's why it takes 4 kills (one level of HP each) to wipe out a need zone, or 12 kills in a blind, etc.
Yeah I heard that from one of my friends that convinced me to buy this game. He literally said that update ruined this game and made those scents/lures/calls practically useless now. The chances of animals responding to your calls/scents/lures feel extremely low. I'd say it's lower than that 40% you said it was at. To me it felt more like a 5% chance or less. I even tested it out. I refunded all my skill points to invest in that ambusher pathway for all the ones that buff your scents, lures, calls, etc and it didn't make a noticeable difference. It felt useless. I even saw wolves close to a lookout tower that I was near so I used the predator calls next to it since it's buffed by it and the wolves straight up ignored me.
I just don't use them anymore it didn't feel worth it. The most success I had with calls/lures/scents was when when I was chilling in a tree stand in silver ridge peaks. I was using the calls/lures/scents and I was able to get elk and mountain lions to come to me. Sadly it took like 1 hour or more of chilling in that tree stand so it's not effective and once the hunting pressure started piling up on the map where I was the animals straight up ignored me. For how long it took to barely have like 3 animals show up wasn't worth it. I could have easily killed more animals just by walking around the map or using rifles. I even saw 2 giant herds of elk walk by and they all ignored me as well.
I personally think the hunting pressure mechanic needs to be removed. It's what ruins the decoys, scents, lures, calls, tripods, tree stands, or just you chilling in one nice spot for kills. The animals avoiding those hunting pressure zones makes everything I listed above useless. I understand if loud gun shots would do that but when you're only stealth hunting with a bow it doesn't make any sense at all.
I already stopped playing the game now because It felt like half the stuff in this game doesn't even work on top of how buggy it is. You make way too much noise, the animals stopped respawning in my files and also my friends files, some of the dlc I bought doesn't even work, unkillable animals that are bugged, animal pathfinding is garbage where they run into mountains/hills/trees and get stuck, and etc.
And the level plays a big role as well. High level animals are smarter and don´t fall for the callers most of the time.
But I agree with what you have stated. I also have these perks and it honestly doesn´t feel like it increases the effectiveness of the callers or causes animals to respond more.
