Mountain lion sounds?
I know they make similar noises IRL, but do attacking pumas/mountain lions make this sort of raspy growl first? Like somebody going "uhhhh, uhhhh"? Or was that something else?

I believe that noise is made when a female is trying to locate her kittens or when any mountain lion in general is telling an intruder they are in the wrong place and best be making steps in the other way.

When they growl like that, that is when I look for them through the binoculars or else my scope got 4 so far.

I think they're bugged as well. I've had the noises persist even when I've moved around a 100m radius and recently heard them as if they were coming from the center of a shallow lake underwater. Even drove my quad right up to the source of the sounds and nothing changed.

Ahhh I had that at night, there was no sound direction and it sounded about 5m away, I didnt know which way to turn. I thought I was being stalked. Eventually it stopped or maybe it moved on. I lived :-)
They arent so aggressive though?

Aside from the one outside the Fernando Park 'gold mine' mission, I've never been attacked by one.

I don’t like jump scares....
been attacked three times in Fernando.

But on silver ridge I heard the growl first time up in the north bit east near the outpost .

Growl last for a long time.

It should indicate where it comes from.
Otherwise it is hard to know direction and I don’t like jump scares in games

bingo. it's called a Chuff, almost all of the big cats make the sound as a warning or a social action with other cats. in other animals it's called a snort, guess cats are special they get their own word :-P

I can confirm this, because the same happened to me yesterday. I had a mountain lion growl sound wherever I went, it basically followed me. A restart fixed itthough.
