1) Run (don't walk) up and down the tree lines near any active turkey need zone. Stop when your heart rate goes up to catch your breath. The goal is to spook them. They have GOOD eye sight, so if you move slow they'll see you coming and have plenty of time to slink into the bushes.
Once spooked into the air, there's a good chance you can get them. Don't fire all ten shots at it in the air, always leave at least one or two! As when it lands there's a brief window to get a nice shot off at it. After that they vanish into the bushes typically.
EDIT: This 1st one is actually pretty similar to a real life turkey hunting technique! Though, it's usually done with shotguns loaded with bird shot, it can certainly be done with 22s like the one in game.
2) Creep around turkey sleep zones at night. Looking for nice thickets. Don't run, but don't creep around super slow. They are weirdly hard to startle if you can get up on them at night. I can score just amazing shots on them this way. Feels a little cheaty almost, not really realistic at all either.
FINAL TIP: Don't shoot them straight on at the front! Go off to the side a bit. They have a hard plate in the dead center of the chest... screws up so many of my shots.
Ethical ammo for turkey:
birdshot (10 ga, 12 ga, 16 ga,20 ga)
.22 LR
.300 gr. arrows
.350 gr. arrows (for the longbow)
.410 birdshot (for the .45/.410 handgun)
The key thing to remember is that the turkeys will answer the crow call but they won't come to it. They'll come to the diaphragm call but won't answer. No decoys required.
I've actually had a lot of luck with the following pretty easy method (since making my last posts) though that's only if you consider patience easy I suppose. I've gotten 5+ turkeys each time I've sat and done this for a few hours.
Either put up a stand yourself near turkey need zones, or build the default box stands that are near turkey zones. I'm actually finding a lot of these that are good! The one on the shore of lake sides that aren't buried in the woods are usually good. The box stands in Colorado are a lot better than the other maps. Head out to one at like 4:30 am, don't run, crouch on approach.
Call with the turkey call every time a 30 in game minute marker passes 5:30, 6:00 etc. If a need zone ends and a turkey group is near by, this will catch their attention and pull them to you. Animals are far less likely to respond to an animal call if they are engaged in a need zone. Also, if you see or hear any sign of a turkey around you, call every minute or so to try and pull them in.
If you see a group of turkeys, always check from for a level 3!! That might be a diamond. Always shoot it first, as those are more skittish than the rest. If you do spook them, call them back in. Anything that's not a diamond will come back, often over and over. The 22 is actually not that noisy and will not cause the birds to panic too much. Don't come down out of the stand until you have seen no turkey in ages. Turkeys don't fly far once shot, I typically leave 5+ laying out there before I go harvest them.
I usually take shots around 150~ yards out. The further away they are, the less the gun spooks them. I didn't need any decoys for this, but I am sure they would improve the effectiveness of pulling them in, especially if you want / need them closer.
Best Turkey got so far using this method. Diamond, Light Brown, 230 yards

I have to disagree. The first diamond I got on the new reserve happened exactly that way. The turkeys ai seems less alert to such things.
