7mm is a longer range gun. 45-70 is powerful but not good for more than 90m or so.

Hmm I’m doing more ranged shots so I’ll probably go with the 7mm thanks for the input!

So I buy the gun and it doesn’t show in my inventory but it took my money just fine..

Nevermind it went through after restarting game

the 7mm is a fine weapon, good for long shots, good for up close, the 45-70 in my opinion sucks, its only good for up close but the only scope you can get for it is a long scope and has a bad view and costs a fortune, only way you can use the 45-70 is without a scope and it doesnt have much penetation, so i would suggest go for the 7mm, its a far better choice.

7mm is for black bear/red deer or bigger. 45-70 is for wild boar/whitetail or bigger. It's like comparing the .223 and the .243. 45-70 is essentially a close range iron sight version of the .270.

I don't have the lever actions but I have all the revolvers- is there any benefit in range or power with the lever actions? ie. the 45-70 vs the .44 with hard-nose
They both seem to fit a similar niche but the pistol scope is much nicer

The scope for the lever actions is really crappy and dark to see through and is really unnecessary anyway. Most effective shots are between 50-120m, after that distance the rounds lose a lot of momentum so scopes are pointless mounted on them.

I'm not really a pistol user, I only used them to unlock them and never used them again so you will have to decide whether 50-120m gives any advantage at all. I'm not certain, but I should imagine that rifle rounds deal a lot more damage in 1 shot compared to pistols, but the benefit to the pistols is that you can take several shots before losing integrity bonus. The pistols allow for follow up shots in case you don't down the animal straight away with the first shot, but the rifles allow you to more reliably take down an animal in 1 hit if accurate the first time.

From my experience using all the rifles, the 45-70 is the same as the .270 for integrity on animals, but deals more damage than the .270 at 50-120m. The .270 deals less damage but is still effective far further than 120m. Similarly, the 30-30 is the same as .243 for integrity on animals, but deals more damage than the .243 at 50-120m. The .243 deals less damage but is also still effective far further than 120m.

I'll have to try for myself, but the stopping power of the .44 and rhino does feel better than the equivalent .270 and about the same as the .338 (for the rhino) at up to around 80 meters. No reason not to try the lever actions at this point since I've unlocked and own pretty much all the other rifles, handguns and shotguns (except slugs and the shotgun scope)

45-70 is absolute GARBAGE. I did some research on the caliber, said it was used to kill BISON back in the late 1800. So when I heard that I was like "SIGN ME UP, 3 SHOTS = 3 BISONS." After I bought it and took it for a field test, the thing was didn't do crap to the bisons, and they were all heart/lung shots. Still very low, tried moose, still nothing, elk, nothing, only bear and white tail. It's a good gun to carry if you don't want to waste 7mm to deer/bear. Just don't buy it in the 1st place. Buy a whitlock 30-30

Haven't tried the .45-70 in game, but looking at it's stats it compares well with the 7mm and the .338. The problem with the .45-70 is the same problem it has in reality. It's more or less worthless past 100 yards. It's a big heavy bullet that loses it's velocity the farther it goes.

With that said, I think it needs a rework, as everywhere I look, It's stated that it's comparable to the .270 Huntsman. However, in Game, it fully states that it's a Big Game gun, with a price to match. I beleve the .45-70 needs a buff to make it comparable and competitive in it's Niche with the other 2 Big Game guns currently in the game.

I also recommend buying the Whitlock if you want your lever action fix. It has more than enough for Small and Medium Game, and has enough punch to go through Boar. Possibly Black Bear too, though I haven't tried it on one yet. Just need to remember to respect it's range, and it wont let you down.

Very much this ^^

When i purchased the .45-70, with no real world knowledge, I expected it to excel at big game..... it didn't and I thought the gun sucked. I had numerous long, flesh wound, chases when i 1st used it and found it very frustrating. It's only good up close and its not good for the largest animals.

I only use it now to make the game harder.

edit: oh it is a good black bear gun though!

I say buy 7mm first then 45-70. The 7mm will punch out accurately to 300m (tip: get the zeroing perk in the rifle upgrade tree and get the mid and long-range rifle scopes) and will drop Red Deer and Black Bear reliably. It will also take out Elk fairly well, and also Moose, but in both cases you either have to get your shot placement 100% accurate on the heart or spine, or expect to do a bit of tracking and lose some quick kill bonus. I think it's a bit better at Elk than Moose, which really need the .338.

The 45-70 gets a bad rap, which to a certain extent is justifiable. It's simply that in the game as it stands currently it only has a limited selection of the ammunition types available to it.

In the real world there's a wide variety of ammunition for different types of game. Depending on what you use, it can punch a neat little hole in a Whitetail (incidentally, it reportedly spoils less meat on the exit wound than even a .243) or blow a coffee can sized chunk out of a Grizzly bear, Bison, or Buffalo. It has been used on Elephant, Rhino, and Hippos with heavy grain bullets.

In the game due to ammo limitations it currently represents the first configuration - it can be used on Whitetail very effectively.

I've also had tremendous success with it hunting Black Bear - I take both this and the 7mm, both with scopes. I use the 7mm for accurate long distance shots (say if the bear is on the other side of a lake), but otherwise the 45-70 (only accurate out to 100m) is good for stalking through dense brush and engaging at close distances - sometimes you need a quick follow up shot, and in the time it takes to break open the 7mm's action the bear is already on you, over a hill, or into a bush/tree-line. You can quickly toggle the scope with the middle mouse button so I pop it on and off depending on how close I am to the bear, closer in I don't want it.

45-70 is my go-to bear gun in Layton Lakes really, except for long distance shots. I am yet to try it out on Brown Bear but I only just bought Medved Taiga. I have taken Elk and Moose with it but as with the 7mm it pales compared to the .338. Again though, it's an ammo thing. It's basically a short-range, repeating 7mm.

Having said all of the above, there is an argument for getting the 45-70 before the 7mm, in the sense that hunting Black Bear at $1000+ per animal is quite profitable (moreso than all but the best Bison, Moose and Elk scores, and the elusive Coyote/Red Fox) and the 45-70 lets you do it easier. There were a number of times I found two bears resting and had to pick one with my 7mm, but could have feasibly dropped both with the 45-70 had I bought it first.

7mm first as it seems a more effective weapon with current mechanics/values.
I have used both a lot and enjoy them both. If you like using iron-sights and shoot at close(r) ranges, the 45-70 is tough to beat, especially w the 3 shot mag. Great fun.

7mm is more a trophy gun, I'd say and praise be. The 45-70 is more for fun but can take anything (big) insta-kill with good shot placement. Bullet drop and penetration get significantly worse after 75/100 meters with the 45-70. The 45-70 "may" get some love in a future patch but that may be a few months away and you won't be disappointed with the 7mm.

If you like the game and keep playing you'll have so much money, you'll have them all anyway! :) I would like to get your feedback on them both when you get there! :D Enjoy.

for me the 45/70 is the most useless weapon of this game. The scope is dull and dark, the range is limited and it is much underpowered. if it was as good as in rl it would fill the gap between the Rhino and the .338 and exactly there it would be seriously needed.. ammo with penetration between 60-70 and nice scope and i would never leave home without it..
