well Just because you don't know of anyone who uses .22 for that doesn't mean it doesn't happen and isn't possible. .22 is honestly amazing. long range, short range, not super loud, cheap and can kill anything from chipmunks to deer, etc. It is most certainly more than a class 1 weapon. But its a game after all NOT IRL.
this was taken from an online hunters website. it is a quote.
"On a recent hunt in northern Alaska, I asked a local Inuit what cartridge he preferred for caribou. Caribou closely match whitetail in body size, and the Inuit shoot quite a lot of them each winter. His answer — a .22 Magnum. The technique used? Catch the caribou crossing a river and shoot for either the spine or the head. Hardly the conditions the average whitetail hunter encounters, but thousands of caribou are killed that way annually".
I personally grew up hunting with a .22. rifles/pistols, etc. I think it gets a bad rap IRL because it isn't the big flashy gun and doesn't make enough BOOM.. Its like the toyota camry of guns. Itll do almost everything you need and want a gun to do, but because it isn't that new flashy orange mustang 5.0 people sorta trash it or overlook it.
It's illegal in Alaska to hunt any big game animal with a rimfire cartridge, both .22 LR and .22 WM are rimrife. caribou are big game animals. and they do not match white tail, they're about 3 times the size, they're more equal to rosevelt elk.
That said, Inuit are native's and if they're on a reservation they have different rules for hunting and harvesting than anyone else. so it's possible they could use rimfire, but to shoot an animal that big with a 22 mag (same size diameter as a .22 LR but about twice the powder behind the mag and a slightly longer bullet for a bit more damage) you'd have to sever the spine or hit their eye to get the brain. not enough bullet or power there to penetrate the skull.
but, believe what you will.
caribou size from wikipedia :
The females usually measure 162–205 cm (64–81 in) in length and weigh 80–120 kg (180–260 lb).[78] The males (or "bulls" as they are often called) are typically larger (to an extent which varies between the different subspecies), measuring 180–214 cm (71–84 in) in length and usually weighing 159–182 kg (351–401 lb)
Whitetail size from Wikipedia :
The white-tailed deer is highly variable in size, generally following both Allen's rule[7] and Bergmann's rule[8] that the average size is larger farther away from the Equator. North American male deer (also known as a buck) usually weigh 68 to 136 kg (150 to 300 lb),[9] but mature bucks over 180 kg (400 lb) have been recorded in the northernmost reaches of their native range, specifically, Minnesota and Ontario.
i don't know where you get the idea that caribou are 3x bigger than white tails? Unless wikipedia is wrong becasue its 'from the internet' .
I'm going to keep things as I grew up doing... a 12ga with either #6 or #4. No decoys, just callers. I'll simulate Spring hunts and follow the state of MO laws. That is never ever shoot hens. Doing so could cost the hunter the bird, his gun, his truck, ridiculous fines and in extreme cases, his freedom. The state of MO game officers have the right (per law) to walk up your driveway uninvited and look in your freezer, though at that point I don't know how they'd tell if a frozen bird's a guy or gal.
These intimidating restrictions are a good thing. They've lead to an explosion in turkey populations. Turkey management works!
Sorry for going RW for the moment guys. I love this stuff...
Musket plus minie is excellent.
.454 nitro with goshawk scope
maybe a shotgun if wanting to focus on turkeys but I've not gone out after them yet, also going to practice with the longbow and try it out some time
It is deemed not powerful enough, so no chance of a diamond using that weapon.
For integrity you must use a class 9 weapon, the .300 being the best one currently :)
Swap the .270 for the .300 and you're good to go :)
