No, animals do not, and cannot, eat other animals in this game.

You should start a circular searching pattern from where the tracks ended until you find its next track. It is not uncommon for tracks to stop for a while and then continue further away; in extreme cases the next track might be as far as 200+ meters away. If its last track was a poop it frequently means the animal made a radical change of direction at that point, so it's next track might not be directly ahead, it might have even doubled-back in the direction it was originally running, hence the advice to do a circular search pattern.

It is a good idea to do this searching in sneak mode and try to keep your noise down because often after you spook an animal and some time has passed for it to calm down, you will frequently run into the animal as it casually walks back to the same location you originally saw it -- if you keep quiet and stealthy you can catch it as it walks back right into your arms. You can give it your loving embrace then. :*)

Let's see, Coyotes eat rabbits, Pumas, Wolves eat Deer, You'll see the need zones with dead bunnies, and spots of blood for the Pumas and Wolves need zones. And I've got a picture of a Puma eating an Axis deer that I shot and hadn't harvested. I've also had Wolves on my Reindeer kill feeding.
But no a Bear will not eat a deer

I have seen that too, but I think they were rather eaten by a subroutine.

I'd say if you occasionally don't find an animal again just go on and find another. This is not TH Classic were it has an impact on your statistics or anything.

When you shoot an animal, first thing I do after about 30 seconds is check my map to make sure if I even landed a kill shot (should be purple or more purple). If not, I don't bother. If you land a poorly placed shot, an animal can "recover" and stop bleeding and continue running. The neat thing is that if you encounter this same animal again within a same session, it will have lower health (found that out today on a moose. I shot it, ran into it 10 minutes later and it was gimping around). Also, use your huntmate when tracking and considering changing track color to "bright green".
