focuso .357, what gives?.
So i've recently started using the handgun line to level it up and unlock the rest of the handguns. When i did this for the first time, they seemed fine. After having my progress wiped and taking a break, i come back and it seems the .357 is nothing but hot trash now. Multiple hunts, all done on roe deer and fallow deer. All shots taken under 40 meters, most at under 30, yet i might as well be spitting on the animals. The only few i was able to harvest show that the bulled stops on entering the skin. 0 pen beyond that. The animals run around for eternity before finally bleeding out. That's if i'm lucky. I'm not expecting miracles, but i thought this was a .357?. Do these not put holes in things? I've had better luck with my .22 than the .357 which seems super odd. Did they do something to it while i was away.?
For now, it's relegated to bunny killing, and only bunny killing. Also, do the other guns get better? I really hope so, because hunting with the .357 is a chore and a half. I would hate to have to go through this with the .44

you need to use the ammo with 40 Penetration , the normal one is bad.
i have the .357 often on me, i shoot all kind of deer with it until 80m and i guess i never had no vital hit the last times with it

It's best to forget about using soft point pistol ammo. The .357s performance turned me off on using pistols but several of my friends like using the Rhino.

Yeah I had the same thoughts about the .357 after coming back after a while. I could usually drop a Roe Deer no prob from the front but now need to hit them from the side to get a lung shot. Once you unlock the hard cast rounds it is much better, even bagged a diamond wolf with the hard case 357 and nearly skewered the poor bastard

ofc you need to hit vital organs so its a aim thing :)

But its really nothing special.... its no Problem to Quickill Deer with this gun ofc you need to use hard cast ammo and stay under 50m to be sure.

maybe ya'll just suck with handguns? kidding :-) i use the .357 all the time, never had an issue dropping musk deer, coyotes, etc with it. used to carry the .243 for class 2 and 3, but now all i carry is the .357 more of a challenge to get closer to shoot them.

And don't use the hollowpoints, they suck like Aegis said, use the hard cast, double lung or lung/heart every time with them up to about 75 - 80m. anything over that is just a waste of ammo, handguns are short range weapons.

They designed the starter ammo to under-perform on purpose so that you would struggle a bit to level up. So, the 357 HP, 243 SP, & buckshot for shotgun all suck. Leveling handguns with the 357 HP is a pain. If you have WP2, the 45 colt revolver is much better for leveling up & you can effectively skip all the "fun" of using the 357 HP for that purpose.

Don't get turned off to handguns by this frustration, bc when using the HC ammo they all have better penetration than the rifle class in general. The rifle class pretty much under-performs compared to RL.

Both the 357 & 45 colt with HC ammo are great for DBL lung shots on class 3 roe deer & springbok out to about 90 yards.

the biggest issue is the starter ammo. Frankly it confuses me to no end. Every other gun class starts you off with stuff made to kill certain classes, and bad at others. That's fine. It sets up the games premise of using the right gun and right ammo for the right animal. Then you go to use the handguns and the starter ammo is all kinds of trash. it's terrible for everything. And you can't just say, o.k., i'll use the hard cast ammo. You have to unlock it. This leads to frustration on hunts, which leads to people simply saying to heck with it and changing classes. I'm sure the next level of handgun is decent, but after all the crap i've gone through with the .357, i'll unlock the .44 then simply never use handguns again. To much frustration linked with the line.
I've had absolutely no issues with the other gun lines. They seem miles ahead of the .357.
It seems that one class always has to be an absolute pain in the arse to level. Way back when the game came out it was the shotgun. Everyone hated it. Seems they fixed it, but replaced it with the .357.

But i like to work for better things in games.... i would always again use the weak ammo until i get the good one.
You can also kill with the starter ammo, just not everything and you need to be closer range.
Also you get the .44 before and can than skill with that ( not that the .44 first ammo is much better)

I'm sure the rest of the guns are good. The problem is that your intro to an entire class is built around such horrible ammo, that it turns people off. I would think you would want a starter weapon to be solid within it's class, yet leave the user wanting to progress to get into the more lucrative stuff. Punishing someone for choosing a weapon seems weird to me. I know from my own experience with this stuff, i'll be taking a break from handguns the minute i unlock the .44. Even though i know it will get better, i've just had enough. I'll go back to bows. Those things are great.

Well, no one has a choice if they have to start grinding with the cheap ammo for the .357 for 700-something handgun score before unlocking the hard cast bullets. This phase of the journey is brutal.

Once you unlock the hard cast bullets, its an immediate gamechanger. Keep using the .357 hard cast bullets until you unlock the hardcast bullets for the .44 panther. .357 hard cast still kills the .44 hollow point ammo. .44 hollow points are still not that good.

Once you get the .454 Rhino, you get full integrity on class 4 to class 9. I hunt with that 60% of the time using a handgun scope and hard cast bullets. Even 12g slugs don't give integrity on class 9 anymore, just 4 to 8.

I can say it was all worth the grind but yeah, the first 700 handgun score was the worst grind in this game for me.
that's where weapon packs and the .22 pistol come into play. quite easy to skill up on rabbits and ducks.

spending all weekend pistol hunting to unlock the .454 been lazy and still haven't gotten it. give myself a challenge and a goal :)
