I’m Loving How Rare The Great Ones Are.
This is exactly the type of rarity we needed with Diamonds and rare fur types like albinos. These Great Ones will retain their “Awe Factor” not only for visitors to your lodge, but for the hunter who was lucky enough to claim The Great One. I honestly don’t mind NEVER getting a Great One of my own, because they shouldn’t be in every single players lodge. That would spoil what they are supposed to be. When ever I visit any other player’s lodge, or have another player visit mine, all the diamonds and rare fur types within their lodge or mine DOES NOT impress anyone anymore. These things have become too common, and everyone has more than a handful of them. If I am ever lucky enough to get one it would be the highlight of my lodge, and I would be in Awe if I ever see one while visiting a friends lodge. That is what The Great Ones NEED to alway be, Truly Rare.

I do fear that a portion of the playerbase (whether they are new or young) will start to protest the rarity of The Great Ones, and complain about how they don’t have Great Ones of their own. I think this is what happened with Diamonds and rare fur types back in the day. I remember seeing player created topics/threads ranting about never getting Diamonds or rare fur types of their own. I also remember after an update (I can’t remember which), but there was a sudden spike in Diamonds and rare fur types being shared across COTW social media sites. That’s when I knew things have changed. I personally got 2 diamonds and a rare fur type practically back to back at that time lol. I questioned the devs on Twitter about any potential changes at that time, but I was simply told I had a lucky hunt lol, sure sure lol

Now here we are. The Great Ones have released (well the first one anyway), and so far so good. Only a few have gotten lucky enough to claim one, which is how it should be. I hope The Great Ones remain rare and special like Diamonds and rare fur types should have been.

When Yukon was released there was an influx. Maybe voluntary they experiment or involuntary they don´t have control over the code. I really didn´t mind though because I hunted so many hours before without getting a diamond. I tend to explore the map and am not just systematically checking need zones or tent spawn so my hunting is kind of inefficient I guess.
Or I just don´t put the time in.

Diamonds is rare enough but I don´t mind great ones. I doubt I will ever spot one :)

I have a handful of diamonds, but most them were either total surprises or one or two where I noticed them earlier but took weeks to find them again to shoot.

I think the "diamond" problem started when players exploited the "Zagg Tactics" technique (now fortunately fixed), as well as server-hopping in multiplayer expressly for diamonds. This has only got worse with the realization that you can camp need-zones.

One solution might be for EW to hide need zones to players -- you can only find them by deduction and observation of animal behavior, and even then not be sure -- with the possible exception of feeders/bait stations as mobile, player-controlled need zones (of course diamonds might ignore them). But people would complain, I suppose.

its just to bad we know what it looks like.. say they said there were 10 different looking ones!!! theses ones going to be little different for scoring but all look the same

Given that only 5.2% of the players of the game have killed even a single Diamond I'm not sure they can be described as anything other than 'bloody rare'.

We need a Great One achievement so that we can track how much rarer those are.

Diamonds aren't rare. I'd call them "uncommon," but I typically see 1 to 3 per month.... would be more if I exploited every little quirk the game has.

No, Diamonds aren't rare. They're so common that 19 out of every 20 players of the game can't be bothered to shoot them.

Or something.

Or 19 out of 20 players doesn't play the game right. Judging from what I've seen in forum posts and negative reviews... I'd believe that.

Wait? There's a right and wrong way to play the game?

How remarkably silly.
McSqurl Nugget May 5, 2020 @ 12:23pm
Agree with OP, to me diamonds are rare, i have 6 including 3 mission diamonds after 1700 hours in the game. Might help if i actually focused on hunting diamonds, but i don't, i've stumbled across 3, actually 4 but they yanked my Blackback last fall when they fixed all the 1000+ point diamonds even though he didn't even score 1000. Oh well. Maybe someday i'll stumble on a Great One :)

And yes i really hope they keep them extremely rare, 1 per map, regardless of species once they introduce more would be my preference.

o'really.. and just what is the "right" way to play game?

What I mean is the majority of people who try this game think they can just run around at free will and shoot animals all over the place.... and then when they realize they can't, they either never grow the patience/playstyle to make diamonds more likely to be seen or they refund the game. Unless something has changed with steam recently, even refunded copies are counted in the % achievement completed.

Interesting that you can tell by forum posts people are getting refunds.

It is very unlikely that I will ever see a great one. So, this content is not meaningful to me. People get all hyped about it, but for most of us it will not change the game one bit. Sorry, but not impressed with their priorities.
DingDongDanger May 9, 2020 @ 4:22pm
The only downside to little frequency is that I forgot to freaking taxi my albino bunny and red gray wolf >< Now I don't know when or if I'll see one again.
