For a new player the weapon packs are amazingly good, simply because they allow you to have decent weapons from the get go.
The crossbow is an absolute beast of a weapon for close up hunting, plus you get a 5x scope.

You can get rifles that are far better than the .243, .270 and 7mm (which is let down by bad design choice. Both it and the .338 are dreadful break action rifles) with the Mosin or one of the 30.06 rifles.
The colt handgun allows you to hunt ducks (if you have the duck dlc) and your shotgun score levels up rapidly because of it.

The atv is invaluable for unlocking outposts on reserves, but if you join a multiplayer the host might be kind enough to pitch a tent at each outpost for you. If you can get someone to do this it more or less negates the usefulness of the ATV, plus they are still hardwired to WASD. Great for right handed players but a complete pain for lefties (myself included).

The tent and ground blind dlc is useful for tents. You probably won't use the groundblinds much, except for the ones you get with the duck or goose dlc.

The tripod and treestand dlc is ok.
It would be excellent if the treestands worked. They are constantly being attacked by mythical beavers and are a complete pain to locate because of it.
The tripod stands are awesome though.

All the map dlc's are good.
Having said that I dislike Medved Taiga. It's just too bland for me and I don't like the animal choice either.

The Yukon reserve is stunning, with the built in weather changes, but is let down by a very poor choice of animals by the devs.
Foxes, Wolves and Bears, so 3 predatory species. Moose (yet again, for the third time. If I never see another moose on any reserve it'll be too soon). Caribou, which are more or less the same as reindeer and no indigenous deer species, like Whitetail, Blacktail, or Mule deer.
It's a game reserve so it could have had a species introduced, after all, if it's good enough for the Argentinian map with Red deer, it's good enough for this map.

The Argentinian map is pretty but is just meh.

The African map is ok but is let down by the devs fear of upsetting politically correct conservation groups and thereby not included the animals you would expect (which I find absurd. It's ok to go and kill loads of other humans on games like cod but we best not shoot any giraffes, zebras, hippos etc).
The African map has a fantastic set of missions, culminating in the ghost wolf mission, which is truly wonderful.

The Spanish map is pretty good but includes three types of goat, for which no callers are available.
It also has Red deer, Roe deer and Boars. So three animals copy and pasted from Hirschfelden.

Reading all of this you may think I don't like the extra maps. I do, all except Medved Taiga, but they could have been so much better.

In my opinion you're better off sticking to Layton Lakes. It's very forgiving with lots of animals and you get plenty of chances at distance shots along the river.
It also includes Mallard ducks, which are by far the easiest and quickest way to make money, level up and increase weapon skills.
I have 6 decoy and blind set ups and I can just keep rotating between them.
Hunting pressure, although shown when you shoot ducks or geese, doesn't apply to them so they keep coming back.

Trophy lodges are ok, if you like that sort of thing. It doesn't interest me personally but it was one of the most requested features asked for by the player base so kudos to the devs for making them.

All in all it's a great game and you'll have lots of enjoyment, especially if you get the weapon dlc's first and or the tents.
If playing single player then the ATV would be next cos it's a huge timesaver.
After that duck dlc, then anything you fancy :)

All of this is just my opinion by the way, I'm sure many players would disagree with me!

Good hunting :)

I cant say for certain which one is worst but I would start with maps and weapons last because maps give you more animals to slaughter and the base weapons are enough to do that. that smoke barrels or what its called I wont be buying but like I said the base weapons are perfectly fine.

Best: Tents & Ground Blinds - ground blinds are kinda useless (although they can be used in some of the missions to speed things up) but the tents are mandatory imo. Having additional spawn points near hot zones is very useful.

Worst: 4x4 ATV - I know it's tempting to get this but it becomes a dust collector once you unlock all outposts, its only purpose is to speed things up when you start on a new reserve, where is the fun in that?

This is only my personal opinion and others might disagree.
4X4 as "worst" for or me as well. I don't even use it to set up new maps. I explore the map by working from outpost to outpost or following the main missions which often take you on a pretty good tour of the map. Really no need for the 4X4 for me and i've barely used it.

That said, I can definitely see why others enjoy them though so it's down to personal preference.

If I had to nail one "worst" down then I"d say hold off on one of the trophy lodges.

Best...I don't think I could choose. Maybe weapon pack 2 as all three weapons have gotten a lot of play for me. Or, maybe one of the dlc maps as those are all fantastic in their own rights.

The atvs are amazing, The trophey lodge is a buggy mess and it deletes your trophies

I'd buy first weapon pack 3 and Yukon map. Don't waste your money to trophy lodges at the beginning

Worst is probably the tripod tree stand pack.
Best high tech pack. Makes hunting at night great.
All weapon packs good.

Do not get the lodges. They serve no purpose.

All the maps are excellent. I couldnt tell you my favourite.

the maps are really the only useful DLC's I did get one of the lodges just for curiosity, but didn't buy any others, and all the weapon / gear dlc's I didn't bother with.

Maybe if the complete game collection wen't on a 70 - 80% off deal I will consider getting the rest of what I don't have

ATV's are the worst thing to happen. They shouldn't even be in the game. Best = Tents and blinds.

Honestly, Layton Lakes offers some of the most well rounded play and is a great starter.

use the search, this has been asked 5 or 6 times already in the last few weeks.

So far got the free DLC(would be dumb not to install them xD) plus the weapon pack 1 for the crossbow(personal choice) and am having fun in the Layton Lakes reserve. Going to be some time before I need to get a new map to see something new and explore more stuff :D But for DLC choice I'd first go for weapons and gear and maps later on once you know how to play the game well :) As for what DLC is best and what is worst that is completely up to personal preference.

The tents are top, probably followed by the ATV (really useful to get to more remote areas and set up tents when you don't want to hike for a long time), and lately I have been really enjoying the crossbow from one of the weapon packs.

The trophy lodge is also good if you want to show off what you shoot, but the base one should have been part of the main game IMO, at least in a smaller version.

As for the other maps, I would say it depends on how much time you want to invest into playing the game or whether there is a particular region/animal you really want to go after.
At the start the Layton and Hirsch. reserves provide a lot of gameplay, so I personally left the other maps for much later, since I like to explore one reserve at a time.

The weapon packs are only worth buying if there is a weapon you really want to use in them.

thanks everyone i appriciate the help currently own the tents dlc now looking to get a map expansion
per.oqvist Apr 29, 2020 @ 1:20pm
I find atvs useful. Only use them when I really want to save time and then they are a god send ;) Can live without them but so can I with most DLC. But they are cheap enough to be worth it in general. I would like to say groundblinds is the least useful dlc. There is just no fun sitting in one place for hours and hope something walks by. I dont even call that hunting :p. Yes I know its likely the most common hunting irl lol

But for some missions if you really want to complete the groundblind missions they do increase the odds and saves you time hopefully.
