Mountain Man challenge
Since the percussion rifle is my new favorite gun, I devised a little challenge; I don't know if this has already been done, but here it is.
Basically you emulate a trapper hunting for bear skin. They mainly trapped for beavers as you might know, but black bear skins were also a valuable asset. This is how it's done:

- Muzzleloader, no scope, roundballs only
- No binocular (aim spotting perk recommended), scents, scent eliminator, callers, first aid kids or any of that other newfangled stuff
- Arctic clothing if applicable
- You only hunt for black bears or grizzlies if Yukon is more your thing

What happened? I haven't been around Layton in months.

all sounds for bears were broken with the weapon pack 4 release, no mating or warning calls, and no foot steps. They're totally silent. I found this the hard way calling some in and didn't notice the one to my left coming into the call either. Until it ran into me and then even the attack sound was gone, just my hunters grunt at getting hurt.

Sounds like fun. Even more of a challenge. Stealth bear hunter... this update is an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I really don't understand how adding new weapons can break the game like this.

I've been hunting bears in the Yukon for the past two days. Grizzly's are very broken right now. How in the world they did that with a weapons pack launch is simply astounding.

I hunted a few Bears on Layton Lakes last night. No problems hearing, tracking them. Worked great

Good to know, so maybe it's just Grizzly then that's affected, i'll check browns in MedVed after work tonight.

But did they make sounds? footsteps or calls?

I've been hunting bears the last few days. Yes, the sound is different. A cross between rabbits and coyote. They are very quiet. I do hear warning barks. And my new favorite weapon is the muzzle loading smokepole.

Just did my first round. Can confirm that black bears - at least for me - make noise and leave tracks. However, I approached one unknowingly with tailwind, so it fled. I tracked it for about one and a half kilometer, always just hearing, only once even seeing it because of course it ran in the wind direction. When it passed a pond I expected it to drink I gave up. I usually don't use scent eliminators anyways, but then again I rarely track animals if it's not a putative diamond. This is gonna be hard, but I think I like it.

I was on Layton a few days ago and warning sounds and foot steps were working fine. I'll check out the Yukon over the weekend.

So, after yesterday didn't do much, I tried again today. And I can confirm that, at least for me, black bears work. Footsteps, cries, tracks, all good.
Except that for some reason their sternum seems to be made out of concrete. I tracked a small female and shot her in the middle of the chest from less than 15 meters away. She ran off without a vital hit. Pursued her for 40 minutes - on my way I got three more bears. It's really something else without having a binocular and having to estimate distances (I am really bad judging distances in this game), but it was fun. In the end I got her with a broadside lung shot. Turns out the first shot got stuck exactly in the sternum in the middle between both lungs and the heart. This has happened before, with a slug from 20 meters. IRL they both would have penetrated deeper, I don't know why exactly bears are like this.
