How to get Fox with Bow
Doing this mission now and have spent the last 2-3 days trying. Its got to the poin t now where its just infuriating.
Everytime I do this I spend a good 5-10mins using the jackrabbit caller - eventually i might see one if im lucky approaching but still a long way off and eventually they just stop at a point and walk the other way - I end up giving chase but lose them in thick overgrowth. This happens time after time.
Is there any sure way tips to get them really close?

Getting really fed up of this mission now and its not even that far into the game :/

I missed it 3-4 times at 20 meters (BUG ?)

Most probably overshot. At close range, you need to aim lower

I think you are suffering the quest hunting a red fox with 60 lb bow in Hirschfelden.
This task is difficulty, but still achievable.

1. Make sure yourself is well covered and the visibility is very low (a white line or even lower, a gray line). Because you need to use a bow to shoot, this means you'll have to hide yourself in some bushes.
2. Never attempt this quest without a Jackrabbit caller.
3. Carefully choose the place to ambush the fox. This might be the most important to hunt a fox with bow. Make sure where you hide have good view. E.g, ascending hillside is an ideal place. Use some objects around, such as trees or rocks or grasses with different color to know the range. Measuring range is a must job in bow shooting, finding some ranges in advance can help you to skip this step while the fox is approaching and directly take action to shoot.
4. Be patient, very, very patient. Fox is extreme sensitive and of good eyesight. Use Jackrabbit caller every 30+ seconds, don't call too frequently, or the fox is gonna spooked. Observe, they won't rush to you directly, they'll wander in the grasses, while you find them stop 30+m away, use caller once again, and wait.

300GR arrow is enough. Fox is fragile, even a non-fatal hit on one leg will make it bleed to death eventually. After you hit it, just follow the tracks, trust yourself, you'll make it.

I agree with Triangle. Hunting Foxes, Jackels, Coyotes and Lynxs all require stealth. Meaning a careful, quiet, low approach, entering cover, using the caller and waiting for the fox to appear. You will hear him approach as he makes a russling sound in the bush. Lift your bow when you hear this and point it toward the sound. (Don't wait for him to appear to raise the bow as he may key in on the movement and flee). He will appear in range so your crossbow will be ok for distance. Yes, use the crossbow because you can shoot from prone, making you less visible than squatting. Finally, if he spooks don't move but do your calls again and he will usually come back into view again. When he does come back into view he will come in a different place. For calling I don't follow a 30 second rule but I do usually call 4 times and then switch to my weapon and wait. Also, use headphones to better hear his approach.

I have just done a bow hunting guide.
Here is episode 2 that includes fox and coyote. https://youtu.be/dNdOUHpXmKk

Here is my strategy.
1. get into very good cover (fox and coyote have good eyesight)
2. give a lot of calls on the jackrabbit caller.
3. Usually a fox wont come any closer than about 20 to 25m. which is why bow hunting them can be difficult. They will often go back and forth in a semicircle at 20m but wont come closer.
4. So, once they get to within 25m (sometimes you can only hear them). Stay crouched and start moving towards them.
5. Once you get to about 10 to 15m of where you think they are or were stop and wait.
6. If they are doing the semi circle thing, they think they are still 25m from you and will often walk past at 10m and you have a good shot.

In other words..... call and approach

Hope that helps.
If you want 100% integrity then you will need to use 300gr arrows on the fox with either the 60lb or 70lb bow. BUT if you are doing the mission it must be the 60lb bow. Any reasonable shot with the 300GR drops a fox straight away
For Coyote hunting you can use the 420gr arrows and keep 100% integrity. The 300gr does not work well against Coyote.

this one is basically what i have done last week.
but before that i travel across the region to find fox's drink or rest area.
after i find it im searching for good cover then do like what james said.
the fox got shot on the head... eventho i aim at it's chest lol

I find the red fox bow hunting mission frustrating too. Gave up after a few hours on Sunday, although I was able to bag several European bison during the session. I tracked one for a while. Had one pretty opportunity but whiffed it. Needed to call it in closer. I like hunting with the bow, especially big game and deer. I did complete the two coyote mission (with a rifle in this case) the same day, which was giving me fits.

You just pull it back and let it go... right into the fox. I really like to hunt rabbits with the bow more though.

i allready shot 3 foxes with my 60lb bow alexander and got not the quest finished.
i dont know why. i am in hte west area of spreeberg (so inside the quest area).
the bos is not to strong (up to 60 was in the quest).

so what do i do wrong? or are only male foxes legit? the last was female.
Findus 2020년 12월 1일 오후 5시 40분
No, shouldn't matter if male or female.

I don't recall if the mission area matched the region in the game exactly. You should get an orange overlay on your map when you select the mission (but you normally don't need to select the mission for it to be active). If you were in the orange area, it might be a bug. Might also matter where you are when you harvest the animal, e.g. if it ran out of the area and died outside of it.

"(Don't wait for him to appear to raise the bow as he may key in on the movement and flee)."

I don't think the "vision" of the animals is that sophisticated. I'd say they simply register your visibility, which depends on your posture, your location and actual forward movement in the world. So you could lie openly on a big stone, rotate around your axis and raise and lower your weapon to your hearts desire without an animal registering that. (Hence also the earlier tip to get on a stone to have a better vantage point.)

your going to even more f'n pissed when you finally get a fox
into bow hunting range after half a hour and ...... YOU MISS it!

*My advice ((aim low)).
Aim about a foxes torso lower than you think you need. About 5-10 inches low...
The foxes are small and you need to aim low to hit anything imo
with those arrows at those ranges (i.e. less than 30-40m)

that is why your hitting them in the head or over shooting, aim low lads

Do invest the 3,000 in scent cover.
And always be in negative cover during their approach.
Get lucky and have a open area for the foxes to approach from if you can help it, glhh

Yea i got the dlc out of frustration .. so the range finder sight made it easy.. shot many with bow now.
Its an option.anyways.
I believe has to be a 60 lb bow not crossbow? Been awhile
Niedersachse_tm 2020년 12월 2일 오전 8시 20분
i use the 60lb bow and shot several and missed even more foxed is the orange area.
maybe its a but.
i will try it in another area.

unfortuantely the rangefinde is not compatible with the alexander bow....or i am to stupid ;)

i use the antii scent spray, try to cover as much as possible, and was very upset at the first fox, that i couldnt aim while lying on the ground and he escaped. ;)

i think you have to do the mission with the Bearclaw Lite CB-60 bow. I first tried it with the 60lb alexander bow and didn't get the mission completed. then i tried the Bearclaw Lite CB-60 bow and it worked.

yeah, a freind suffested that too and i am now with the bearclaw..but had no luck so far
. once i had a fox coming and a herd of wisents came by and chased it away...

It could be that you have to use one of the non-DLC bows for it to register. If you are in the western part, it is easier because the foliage is not so thick. Also, if you have a tripod stand or a tree stand, and can call it in, that might help.
