Tripod setup noise
When you place a tripod stand you can hear a brief racket of noise. How far away can animals hear this particular sound? I know it probably varies by species, but, in general, what's your experience for a safe distance to be at when it comes to this particular sound?

I typically setup my tripods and ground blinds in the area BEFORE the animals are scheduled to arrive, but sometimes I stumble upon a chance opportunity and am tempted to pop up a tripod for a harvest festival.

i believe it's either 100 or 150m away, same when you build a structure, activate an outpost, etc. Since i never can remember which i play it safe and figure 150m.

I suggest to be at over 250m... 'cus I recently spooked a "pretty sure diamond-grade" piebald Moose at 230m by placing a Tripod that woul've given me a better shooting line... I rage-quited at the moment I realized he was gone...

coincidence.

I've had animals 200 ish meters away that never noticed me setting up a tripod.

If it was a diamond you could have followed the tracks unless you were near the out of bounds area and ran off there.

It's the same as placing a tent.... up to 300m

Does wind direction play at part?

It varies depending upon the species, the difficulty level assigned to the animal and whether or not it has been coded to respond aggressively to a threat. It's easier to spook a level 9 Very Hard Black Bear than it is a level 2 Minor Black tail deer. As a general rule of thumb I expect every animal within 100 meters to react negatively to the noise of a portable structure being erected. Further, I expect the majority of the animals within 150 meters to be impacted by that noise to some degree. I never immediately use a tripod I just erected except to look around to be sure I've got the FOV I want when I do hunt from it. Erecting a portable structure is best done with a "I'm going to use this later today or tomorrow at the earliest" frame of mind. JMO.

Of course wind direction plays a part.

Portable Tripod makes Herd Disappear
Connors Mission #7, travel to Calburn Canyon. I went to the canyon and ran around for an hour without seeing any animals. Then I came upon a herd of female elk. I approached within 150m. I set up my tripod and entered it, and the herd disappeared.

No animals were seen running away, none got up from their rest zone. They simply were no longer there.

Tripods (also tents) are making noise during setup. Most animals will run away.

Tested it many times and it's 150m. If you wanna be 100% safe its 160-170 meters.

What's worked for me if I find a busy need zone is sneak to where I want to setup at, then do the first shot and use caller. While they're fleeing, setup tripod. They don't flee past 90 seconds so either the need zone and/or caller brings em back. This method has never failed me with herds at a need zone and usually works even if no need zone for at least a few kills.
