Is there a way to do this? Or am I just supposed to go to my garage and get a new one?

Yes, request a new one = repair in your garage.

Correct, you have to 'recover' it from your garage.

Yeah figured that out, hoping there was a way to do it when you're out and about and not having to return to an outpost.
