Double lunged a diamond & still missed 100% quick kill.
I haven't been having much luck getting 100% quick kill on Water/Cape buffalo with the 470, so I decided to start carrying the crossbow, instead. The first Water Buffalo I come across is a level 9, and I spooked him before I got close enough. Waited for him to come back and got a nice broadside shot at a bit over 50 yards. He didn't run far, maybe 30 yards, and dropped.

I end up with 87% quick kill and lose out on a diamond rating.

Diamond Water Buffalo aren't really that rare, so I'm not too upset about losing it, but damn, I just can't seem to catch a break with lung shots on these animals. I've tried the 338, 470 and now the crossbow, and can't consistently get a 100% QK with any of them.

Brain & heart shots work, but a double lung with the proper weapon should work exactly the same. I'm rapidly losing interest in hunting these animals.

I guess buffalo is too big even for 600gr bolt?

If im not wrong you can get 100 % quick kill with hitting double lungs with the .470. And with the .338 you have to hit the brain or heart thats right.

I have shot many buffalo with the cross bow and got Q.kill, I have gotten 7 L-9 buffalo and none were diamonds

For medium sized critters and up It has never been exactly easy to get enough penetration to score a hit on both lungs, let alone receive 100% of the QK bonus. Not even when using the right type of ammo and right class of weapon. Blood flow rates have been increased by 60% so now animals bleed out faster and thus we receive less of a loss in QK bonus pts than we used to get.
The magic numbers seem to be <8 seconds and wounded animal travel distance <100 meters. If a wounded animal exceeds either my chance of getting 100% of the QK bonus is practically nil. I've also found that when an animal drops it does not necessarily mean that it's dead. There can be a little lag in there as it finally bleeds out. I believe trying for a dbl lung shot on medium/large sized game falls into a sort of "maybe" category when it comes to getting 100% of the QK bonus.

The crossbow is not the most powerful bow in the game. The same shot with a more powerful bow and/or made at <50m might have done the job or a more perpendicular shot. Then again, maybe not. The % of max sized animals which actually have a max possible score of 950-955 is apparently rather high so I don't have a lot of wiggle room. There, I've run out of possible excuses for the way the AI works when it comes to the QK bonus. It's kind of a crap shoot when it comes to lung shots and the QK bonus. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

Nice bull by the way.

Yeah, that stinks. Looks like a nice shot. My guess would be the distance of the shot itself having something to do with the equation. Maybe inside of 50 or 30 meters. You can at least experiment.

That stinks, I have had several good double lung shots that didn't quick kill.

I hit both lungs of European bison today with 600gr arrow using CB-60 from about 30-40 meters. Got only 76% quick kill. I would be pissed off if it cost me a Diamond, but I wouldn't use CB-60 if I knew it was potential Diamond

I give up on these things. I'm not meant to have a diamond, apparently. This one was completely my fault, as I screwed the heart shot.

I'm going to hunt something simple for a while. Maybe some of those killer ducks on Layton Lakes.

Score 932 with 90% quick kill might not be Diamond. You lost about 17 points which would give you 949. There is very slim chance of getting 950 if some decimals used in calculations

Yeah, you're right about that. It would have taken some luck to make diamond. I think getting 100% QK and still not making diamond might have sucked even more than screwing up the shot.

If I recall, you are more likely to drop the animal faster if the lung impact is towards the top/front of the lungs. The arrangement of blood vessels puts the high-volume arteries there. So not only will you collapse the lungs, but you'll knock out the arteries that feed them and drop them almost as fast as a heart shot.

I've shot animals with lung shots, and had them get two steps and drop. It's funny because they do the 'oof' animation, then stumble and ragdoll.

I do not, for the life of me, understand why the devs are unwilling to FIX this utterly broken feature. It is unrealistic, arbitrary and - like many threads like this one show - only takes the fun and thrill out of it.

A double lung shot should always be a 100% quick kill, no matter how far the animal may run.
This is the best possible shot you can make, in terms of ethics, and the player is STILL punished for it. Additionally, projectiles need to penetrate more reliably. Hunting projectiles are designed to pass through the body for a few good reasons and yet the devs ignore this and give us rifle cartridges for deer and elk that feel like a damn .22LR.

Just finally address this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Make it a DLC for all I care, I'd probably even buy it out of desperation.

Well, double lung shot has been improved a lot just recently. However, the game still factors ammo size and distance. The game doesn't simply tag organs as 'hit' or 'no hit'. Try heart shot on moose with 7mm and it will drop, use .270 and watch moose running for a while despite penetrated heart. So, it is possible to assume that in case of smaller ammo and/or longer distances the game reduces damage effect leading to loss of QK bonus
