Weapon choice for P. Fernando ?
Just got the map and enjoying it so far. Just in the last few hours got a S puma, axis deer, S muledeer, and a B blackbuck. The first and last with the .223, so that already seems like a keeper for this map.

I just leveled up to 28, one more to get the Apexview binoculars, which I really want. But I have 73k in the bank, and also want a lvl 4 rifle. Biggest I have now is the 7mm. So it comes down to the water buffalo... can I risk trying the 7mm when I run into one and save for the apexview? Or just bite the bullet (pun partially intended) and get the .338? Already have three scopes that will fit it, but not quite liking the accuracy rating. I also don't have the WP 2 dlc, so I don't know much about the Grelck, other than what is listed, no idea what the in game $$ is.

So asking if it would be worth getting the .338 now and toughing it out until I can afford the new lenses, or just go with the 7mm and avoid the buffalo? Or would getting the WP 2 pack a good option?

Right now I am fairly diverse from everything between .22 to 7mm, plus crossbow and CB-60.

TIA

I hit a buffalo in the lung with a .270 when africa just came out. I don't know if it's still like that but as long as your shot is broadside, kinda close, the 7mm will probably be okay.

I think the grelck is free in game but cost 3.99 in DLC 2.

7mm with soft points will bring Cape down. Seems soft point have increased damage with last patch. I use the 338 in Africa for cape, lion and gemsbok. Used to use poly tip but now with soft point it takes them down quicker. 7mm will let you shoot from a greater distance.

When I hunt PF I carry the .243 and the 7mm. I can double lung anything except a water buff with those. I can kill a WB with the 7mm but getting a 100% QK bonus while I'm doing it hasn't been reliable. Using the .338 has also proven to work the same way. 2 out of 3 shots at less than 70m broadside failed to penetrate deep enough to hit even one lung. (There was no bone involved in those three shots...just flesh and one lung hit and I used poly rounds).

Thanks for all of your answers. Think I will just save my money and go with what I have, aside from buying 7mm soft point rounds, and another tent. Left them all in LL. Stayed away from SP rounds since I bought the game, just didn't like them with the starter .243. Will give them a try now.

@"Rattlesnake": Will try your photomode tip out. My eyes IRL aren't perfect so using lenses in game helps me to spot my target.

Thanks for all the great advice. Much appreciated!

Update: Took out a WB with the 7mm and soft point rounds. First two I hit I lost track of, third aimed just behind the scapula and it didn't make it far. The .223 Docent is working quite nicely for me here, so for now those will be my primary rifles. Just took an axis with my .357 as well.

Just leveled up again and bought my new lenses. Very happy that I held out for them, they perform much better than I expected.

Thanks again for all the input.

Go straight ahead for 7mm.
.338 is actually the same useless as 7mm before a buffalo. After spine shot is doomed, the only way for 7mm & .338 to quick kill a buffalo is a precise heart shot. So on Patagonia map, 7mm is the same powerful as .338, but it can keep the integrity of red deers, mule deers and pumas.
With the assumption that you doesn't own Weapon Pack DLC 2, the recommend gear for Patagonia map is
.243 + 7mm + 165lb crossbow.

For the binocular, I recommend you save your money for the latest 7x24 with rangefinder.
Before you are able to afford it (money & lvl), simple use the found animal icon on map to get the precise range between you and your target.

>>...found animal icon...<<

Boy, I feel like a dummy. We have a "Found Animal" icon?

I usually use the pink hunting pressure circle which tells me the location he was shot, not "...precise range between you and your target...".

I may be reading the post incorrectly.

Buffalo are just annoying, skip em.

Calls:

Muledeer - Wheeze caller
Blackbuck - antler rattler
Red Deer - red deer horn
Axis Deer - axis screamer call
Puma (if you want) - distressed fawn caller

Weapon loadouts:

1. (brush gun fun) - 30-30,45-70,7mm magnum
2. (not getting close) - mn1890, 7mm magnum , third gun of choice
3. (not getting close alternative) - .243, .270, 7mm magnum.

These three loadouts will give you full integrity and are easily able to quick kill anything from class 1-3. Broadside lungshots obviously encouraged. You can get away with quartering shots if you shoot lung through shoulder.(you need poly tip ammo for that)

notes:
.243 and the 30-30 are to be used on axis deer and blackbuck.

.270 and the 45-70 are to be used on muledeer (.243 / 30-30 aren't quite enough for them)

7mm magnum to be used on red deer and the occasional annoying puma.

mn1890 has great stopping power and is to be used on axis, blackbuck and mule deer. It is just as, if not more, powerful than the .270 but gives the full integrity bonus of the 30-30/.243 rifles for class 1 animals and smaller class 2 animals.

My first axis I took with the .270 and got 0% integrity. 100% on a mule buck. Haven't fired at a red yet, been seeing mostly doe so far, only spotted one buck and he got away too fast. Early in the map found a shallow ravine loaded with mule need zones. The one I got kept showing but took nearly an hour of hiding until he got comfortable enough to give me good LoS with the .270. Didn't have to track him. The .223 has been working well for me on puma and small deer, and I like the range (I put my Argus on it).

The 7mm with soft point is working for me on the WB, as long as I am careful to not hit the shoulderblade.

@ Triangle: My bad, I phrased that poorly. I already had plenty to buy the apexview, just needed to level up. But didn't have enough for both that and the .338. But as I said in my update I leveled from 27 to 29 in my short time in this map, so bought the new lenses and am very pleased with them. Will have to look into my crossbow again, I haven't used it awhile. I remember getting 0% integrity on bear with the 600 gr bolt in LL. Kinda ironic coming from the the same guy that got a silver bear with a .22 LR.

I highly recommend buying weapon pack 2. The 7.62mm is a death machine. in Fernando I use the .22 for teal and the .338 for buffalo. Everything else falls easily before the 7.62. Same thing in Layton; I use the 7.62 for everything from coyotes to black bear.

I just put the WP2 in my cart. Was already looking at it, and from what I have read elsewhere and on these posts the mn1890 does look like a very good general purpose rifle for me. Plus the DLC is fairly cheap, so why not? :) Already have the sights for it.
