As realistic as DH2005?
Do the deer have randomized antlers for thousands of combos and a realistic scoring (antler scoring card) as Deer Hunter 2005? Are there any unrealistic things like computers or similar that tell you where animals are? I loved DH2005 because it was one of very few that was as realistic as possible and still fun as hell. Animal behavior was realistic as in sleeping during the heat of the day, bulls fighting each other when females was around (rare), deer going up on their rear legs to grab leaves from a tree (really rare to see). The graphics looks so nice in The Hunter but i fear its more arcady and not realistic other than how it looks? BTW is bow hunting a bit realistic in the way it feels and works? Thanks!

The answer to most of your questions is no, incl the assumption that COWTH is arcady (though some consistently lobby for new things that would make it lean in that direction). Animal behavior mimics much of what I've actually seen them do in the wild. They also do some things I've never even heard of a wild animal doing let alone seen something like it. For example, there are no battles for herd supremacy and yes some of our Lesser Kudu have billy goat horns instead of spirals. There are quite a few bugs so I wouldn't call it a "finished" piece of work but it's better than other hunting games that have hit the market lately.

Thanks man. Im thinking of getting it just for a bit of relaxing fun. Im thinking i might stop playing it rather fast though if its not realistic enough and its all the same every time (no variations in antlers to hunt for and finding that amazing perfect one etc). DH2005 after you played a certain amount of hours (cant remember now but it was a lot of hours) would start putting in real massive bucks. You wouldnt see them until you invested time in the sim which made it special when you saw them. So much right done in that hunting game which is why it was used in hunting tournaments for years and years. Comparing thousands of antler combos where you could win over someone else due to more perfection in the points even though it had the same amount of points etc. So good. Hmm... Sitting with my finger over the BUY button, lol. Just want some relaxing fun but thinking i will regret it after a day or two. :D

i still play DH5 at least once a week with some guys and have tournaments, and you can still find multiplayer lobbies and maps..i love the stuff you can do in that game like build wooden stands and blinds plus use whatever gun you want and the awesome antlers..there is no excuse why call of the wild shouldnt have better antlers.. i went back to CLASSIC cause cotw is just the boring same stuff over an over with lack of variety.. and tired of not being able to shoot a deer with a 7mm or 45-70 and the score goes down..

Thanks for telling me that! I was about to buy it but i was thinking that it will probably just feel same ol' same ol' very quickly due to it not being realistic enough. If there is no proper behavior of the animals and you only kill for weight then i know i will find it boring real fast because there is no variation - its just the same animal over and over while leveling up. DH2005 is a masterpiece.

I actually talked to one of the coders for DH2005 and he was so sad that their company at the time was sold to IIRC Microsoft. He said the whole developer team (not the bosses) wanted to continue making DH2006 and further into the future and that they wanted to make it more and more realistic... Imagine that! How awesome would it have been to have DH2019 with the same dedication to realism but with todays graphics and sounds... Just wow. Sadly the good guys who put their soul into detail almost always lose out to simpler flashy greedy businesses.

I made maps for DH2005 that was used in tournaments even though i didnt compete myself. But i loved making maps and i made them super detailed and very realistic looking. Absolutely loved making them, and i learned how to use a lot of detail without (at the time) losing performance. Like having grass covering everything and have grass variation so it looked natural etc. Good times. :)

The Hunter Call of the wild realistic enough for me, if I wanted something more realistic I would just go hunting. Things like territorial battles and the like seldom experienced by a hunter anyway. They do include cool things like an extremely rare piebald deer (only saw one in over 140 hrs of playing).

Yup. Those rare ones was in DH2005 as well. Took ages to find one. :) And i dont agree with "go out and hunt if you want more realistic than arcade". The game was really popular and people still play it because it was so well done. Doesnt look as good as the modern ones but its deeper in its mechanics and realism which makes it a really good game. Not holding it against anyone for being ok with more arcade games though. We all have our taste. I personally just asked because i know i wont like this. Thats all. :)

yeah i wish they did still make the DH series....we need food plots, actual seasons to grow and manage the bucks..being able to hang cameras, lock-ons or blinds wherever...take everything from DH2003 to 2005 and you would have a masterpiece ...plus i remember the time where you could actually be the animal and go online and try not to get shot..i used to be the deer so i could scout for the big bucks on my maps..plus have maps again would be awesome to download and hunt..and having actual scrapes, buck rubs, and bedding areas to hunt over again like they had..

Oh yeah! Now i remember, you could find scrapes and rubs and know bucks being around. :) The deer also rested mid day during the heat etc. So good. Oh well maybe we get a great hunting sim again sometime in the future. Some developers out there are passionate about these things and sometimes they kick into action. :)

You can also hunt for other animal species with theHunter: Call of the Wild, was this also possible with Deer Hunter 2005? It was nice to have a heat detection on your rifle to easily detect the deer in the night, I hope that there will be such a kind of dlc for the theHunter: Call of the Wild one time.

Nope. Deer Hunter was only deer. Well, there was a jackalope if you put in tons of time in the game that could pop up. :steamhappy:

if your are interested in a jackalope hunt you can come to Wyoming and ill set you up on a packaged guided hunt..included is whitetail plus a muley and a pronghorn with a bonus jackalope.. but you have to be patient as most are doe jackalopes and the bucks are rare but given you have placed the right whiskey next to its hole is the key to a great and once in a lifetime jackalope buck hunt...

TheHunter COTW lacks a lot of thing compared to DH2005, I still like TheHunter though, it is the only modern hunting game on the market right now.

Interestingly enough I installed Deer Hunter Tournament today and captured some gameplay video (the bad successor to DH2005), the game is a letdown compared to its predecessor, but animations and physics are really satisfying, something lacks in COTW.

https://youtu.be/dBH9fsf7AyU?t=45

I think COTW will be great once devs fix bugs, glitches, animations, add more content and fix game mechanics especially animal AI, currently the game is broken if you ask me, I see a lot of animals just idle, get stuck or a pack of them spawn in a place and then get stuck together, etc.

I tried playing DH2005 just for nostalgia but the game is crashing as soon as I change graphics options which is sad.

There is still an active DH2005 site with a small membership running here.

https://www.granddadlodge.com/

They have a download library with maps and patches, have a 24/7 server and run comps on a Saturday night..

If you want to run DH2005 on win 7 or 10 you need to run as administrator and also set the game to run in compatibility mode for XP.

The graphics/sound crash mentioned above was an original problem which was addressed with the official 1.2 patch. Installing the 1.2 patch should fix it.

DH5 should not be confused with DH2005.

DH 1,2,3,4,5 were different games from a different publisher than the DH 2003, 2004 and 2005 series which also included the Bird Hunter series and Trophy Hunter 2003.

But we move on, and theHunter classic and COTW are different games with similar content built by two developement teams with entirely different views as to what a hunting game should be.
As a result not everyone finds one or both of them entirely to their liking. Its a very personal preference.

Well, I think The hunter COTW is the most realistic hunting game currently on the market. It is a bit arcade but in my humble opinion it's quite realistic enough to be fun. Plus they release a lot of updates so who knows what it will be like in the future, it's still a work in progress.

.
I already use the v1.2 patch, tried different compatibility modes and running as administrator, but still once I change video settings the game hangs up, tried this with different PCs with no luck.
