But sometimes the wolves just run the other way.
B / G Bears usually only attack when provoked.
Usually that requires one shooting at them and injuring them.
Same can be said for the Buffalo on the Yukon.
They'll charge / trample you, but will warn you with a snort.
The deer, moose on Layton Lakes / Yukon just trample you. Lol
Same for Medved.
Tho' usually some animals give off a warning call before they attack you.
But that's not a guarantee in this game. Lol
I can't say what occurs on the other reserves as I don't play them.
But I know lions will attack unprovoked.

Then re-spawn there in a heartbeat and face that lion down before it can run off ! ; )
I've done that hunting wolves on the Yukon.
I think the game being fubar and full of bugs / glitches is penalty enough.
