How to fend off animal attacks
I am horrible at fending off animal attacks. I actually "panic" (I guess that's true immersion) and don't know what to do. I pull out the revolver but it can't find where the animal is and I'm frantically turing and flailling all over the place. I tried hiding behind a large rock after shooting a bisson but he still managed to find and injure me ..after which he died. But his buddy came after me and did more damage. Wolves and even wild boards are impossible for me to defend against. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing (other than don't miss)?

With wolves you stand up and then back away slowly so they don't surround you. With Buffalo or Bison you can move/dodge sideways as they charge and shoot them as they pass by or simply run away. Generally speaking putting yourself into a hasty reverse is what you want to do. Look at the bright side, you just might have found a place where those kinds of animals hide out. Go back with a tripod stand the next day and set up in that area, then try to call them out of the brush around the same time you were attacked the day before. The tripod gives you two advantages. One it puts you out of reach and two..should you decide to hoof it into the brush to get a shot at an animal you saw 150 meters from the tripod... it gives you a place to run to should you get attacked by something during your stalk. I've had more than a few buffalo chase me back up into my tripods (then I killed them as they ran around beneath me).

Speak softly and carry a big revolver. Dont freeze, you need to keep moving, especially with buffalo and bison, there is quite possible to dodge their attacks.
With wolves you hear the growl when they are hunting you, pinpoint the direction of the attack and try to drop few of them before they reach you, three of them dead is usually enough for rest of them to flee.

Sounds like me. I easily freak out with the wolves.

Wolves are tough, as for any trick you are missing, I usually just use a good old fashion hand saw against those boards

lmao love it!

Used to be you could step sideways and look the opposite direction so it'd spin you in a circle in one spot and the bison/buffalo wouldn't hit you, they'd just run around in a circle while you popped them. Did this long long time ago when i forgot to switch weapons and shot one with the .243 by accident.

Now the "hit box" has been increased, that tactic doesn't' work anymore.

So dodge to the side, and carry the first aid kit, once you get the timing down you won't need the kit.

Get up on a tripod, tree stand or simply a stand.
Atop a boulder will not likely keep one safe. Regardless of how tall it is.

Besides that... probably ought to have a 1st aide kit handy in your quick / recall inventory.
Or just die... and be returned to the nearest outpost.

Place a tent near the area hunted... if you wish to fast travel back to collect your harvests.
Otherwise you may be sent back to an outpost nowhere near where you were hunting.

There's no penalty for dying...
In fact your damaged health will be rewarded with 100% vitality.

But it could be a long walk/run back to the area you once were....
And one could run out of time to collect their harvests.

When it comes to wolves... I often sacrifice myself during that hunt.
Sometimes... I just can't seem to avoid death or recall my 1st aide kit quick enough. Lol

I'm curious.
I was in a portable hunting blind, trying to catch red foxes (but failed).
I got bored, and about that time a Bison was walking by, so I switched weapons, and went for it instead.

Of course, once I fired at his neck... I remembered I was using the basic .247, and it's not strong enough to OHKO a Bison.
He of course, charged at me.
And then glanced off of the blind. A few more times he came at me, but couldn't reach me.
(I'm fairly certain that in real life, he'd have tore through that blind like it was wet tissue paper)

Was I just getting lucky, or are they actually unable to attack you in a portable hunting blind?

(On a side note, I popped a basic arrow into the Bison's lung, and he died shortly thereafter.)

I get killed every single time I am attacked. I absolutely hate it. I don't know if it's because I'm 51 and have slow reflexes or what, but I sure wish there was a way to turn off their aggression in single player. I've resorted to taking a tripod with me everywhere and when I start to get attacked I pull it out and jump into it like a little ♥♥♥♥♥. It takes up so much room in my inventory though. Oh, and I think the cows are the worst and I hate them with a burning hot hatred. Sometimes I sit in my little tripod and wipe out entire herds just to satisfy my contempt for them.

I really like this feature, nothing like hunting critters that will hunt you back. I get killed here and there but my dodging is getting better:steamhappy:.I have managed to jump on bigger rocks and stay safe from Cape Buffs but no encounters with the cats or wolves so can't say if a rock will help you there. Plus I always carry a tri-pod both for safety at times and they just work for killing critters.

Sounds like you'd like Monster Hunter World.
The animals you hunt in that are more than capable of fighting back.
