Its used to scare birds into taking off and then firing on em

I find it extremely useful when close to a deer/moose/etc. that is facing away from you. When you whistle they tend to turn around trying to see where the noise came from before starting to run, allowing you to land a shot straight into their heart or lungs.

well i kinda hoped dogs would be added into the game but i guess startling animals can be some use too

I use it even if they are broadside but moving. When making the noise they stop for a second or two to place a good shot. Good when they are moving from one brush to another to use the space bewtween.

Can whistling help in scaring an attacking bear away?

I got attacked recently and successfully defended myself with the starter Revolver but it was a pretty close fight. Black Bear dropped my health down to 40% or so.
So that got me thinking. Can whistling help in such a situation?

I mean, if i would go hunt a bear actively i would bring larger caliber rifle than i currently posess to begin with, but that one just attacked me cause i existed.

Yes whistling does indeed work as a scare tactic, i use it often when i need to move through areas where bears and even wolves are two close for comfort, scares them running , works well on bison two and boars, especaily if you jump periodicly , its a simple scare protection and effective, but DO NOT use this in the pressence of lions or buffilo its will only lure lions in your direction and inrage buffilo, their simpley too dam aggresive to easyly scare. the best defence agsint them is being quiet and invisable and when it comes to lions importantly downwind.

Had to remap the key for whistling. kept whistling by accident and scaring the animals away. :lunar2019crylaughingpig:
The default X for whistling is much better used for crouch stance instead, that way you have prone and croutch together in logical succession and easier to use fast if you spot the animal.

This works, yes, but not if they're already mid attack. Whistling at a bear trying to rip your throat out isn't going to dissuade them

i will whistle to clear the ground under my stand when i want to get down and harvest a couple corpses, in this way i dont have to worry about getting trampled.

I also use it to get a group to open up a bit to allow for a shot on a trophy that was hiding behind other herd members. but in that case it should be the last straw and you need to be ready with the shot.

I dont know about the whole whistling to get a full stop for a better shot. Depends on specific situation i guess. but i would not make a habit out of that. When animal is walking in slow stride its not necessary. but if trotting or fleeing you might get it to stop for a second or two.

also remember that when bow hunting your shots do not give away your position but your whistle might.

Need to be careful around those small patches of bushes and trees, they often have lions in them hiding. First lion I saw jumped out from the bush and took my head off, ofcourse I went back, crawled inside the thicket and took his head off with .300 into the brain. :lunar2019grinningpig:
