I was killed 3 times in a row trying to down a big male. Luckily it was not too far from a camp so, with persistence I managed to take him down. It was quite scary, even though just a video game.

What i don't understand is the Last Rhino mission. I approched the camp and nothing is happening.

The .339 w/poly ammo got stopped cold by the upper part of a scapula on a young bull near where you bury the whobob carving. He just kind of shrugged and looked up at me on the cliffside, then sauntered into the brush.

When you spot it and it says "aggressive", watch out. Had one come at me from quite a distance when I was doing the water sample mission.

Only a couple of hours into the new DLC, and only armed with a .243 and .357, and walked into a couple of them in a patch of thick scrub on my way to an objective. Not happy...as I really wanted to try buff, but don't have the express....ended up doing a lot of creeping and crawling and hoping the wind didn't change on me to get out of the thicket.

Don't worry. They run away if they hear a twig snap. The moose on Layton and Medved are more dangerous.

I've only run across the cape buffalo once so far. Right lung from 48.5yds with a 600gr arrow and a bit of tracking put one down. The rest ran to the other side of the continent I think.

This isn't arguing the statement, but more for knowledge. Facts I've read up on about the Cape Buffalo online and copied here

African buffalo is large animal that can reach 6.8 to 11 feet in length, 3.2 to 5.6 feet in height and weight between 660 and 1900 pounds.
African buffalo has large head, broad chest and strong legs. It is four times stronger than ox.
Body of African buffalo is covered with hair that can be brownish to black in color.
Horns of African buffalo are shaped like question marks. Males have longer and thicker horns.
African buffalo is a grazer. It feed mainly on the grass. When the grass sources are scarce, it may eat shrubs and trees.
African buffalos live in large herds that sometimes include thousand animals. Usually, herds are smaller, with up to 12 animals on average.
Herds usually consist of females, their offspring and one or more males. Males that are not part of the herd can form bachelor herds, or live a solitary life.
Solitary animals are easy target of lions, which are their natural enemies.
Life in herd ensures certain advantages. Animals are well informed about the best feeding areas and sources of water. Besides that, they are protected against the predators.
When faced with predators, animals of the herd form a circle around the young, old or weak animals, exposing their large and sharp horns toward the predators. This barrier is very effective and prevents predators to reach the animals that are not strong enough to fight.
African buffalo is well known for its exceptional memory. It will recognize a person (such as hunters) that hurt it in the past and it will attack it at their next encounter. Same is with lions. They will "preventively" kill cubs of lions that are known attackers of the herd.

and also :

11. Cape Buffalo have very poor sense of sight and hearing, but extremely good sense of smell

10. "Twins are very rare — the only recorded twin birth where both calves survived occurred at Hunt Africa."

9. "White calves are also very rare — one has been born on Hunt Africa."

8. "Buffalo are reported to kill more hunters in Africa than any other animal. They are known to ambush hunters that have wounded or injured them."

7. "Buffalo are capable swimmers and often cross deep water in search of better grazing."

6. "The hide on a bull buffalo's neck is as thick as 2 inches in places, which protects it during battles with other bulls for dominance."

5. "Buffalo have smooth tongues — the old lore that their tongues can lick the skin off a man is nonsense."

4. "The adage an elephant never forgets would be matched by a buffalo never forgives. They have been known to attack people that have harmed them even years after the event.

3. "A buffalo has four times the strength of an ox, according to research by Dr. John Conde — he tested their pulling strength. This explains why they are able to tip a motorcar."

2. "Cape buffalo are known to kill lions, and can seek out and kill lion cubs — preventative punishment."

1. "Cape buffalo have exceptional memories. I have often been approached by buffalo that I have not seen for many years, which are tactile and demand affection."
