also, make sure you do not walk downwind and make a lot of noise. check the UI icons right under for feedback about that.
also, check the animal population maps to find where you have the most chance of finding certain animals. you find them in the guides section, they're player made.
if you're aware of how to hunt it doesn't take more than 30 minutes to find something. (in my experience)
so check the guide section, as well as youtube for guides.

Go after deers and coyotes with your starting rifle, bunnies are good as well but you will get 0% integrity bonus. Still good for cash, XP and some weapon score to unlock better rifles sooner
I don't have any friends. It's been night time in the game now for over an hour.....I don't know what to do.....no animals anywhere . Maybe nothing will happen until I get to Lake Cheelah.....and I have no idea how to get there.....it doesn't say anything at all on the map :-/ , and the game doesn't tell you how to get there either....
Do you have tips off? Reserve warden provides a lot of useful information. When you spot a moose or its tracks for the first time, it tells you that you need larger caliber to hunt it
Open the map and wait for about 5-7 seconds, it will highlight mission area (might need to zoom out to see it if you are far away). You can then wlk to that area, or use ATV if you have one, but leave it at least 400 meters away from mission area as it spooks animals, continue by foot

Unless you know for sure animals are in the area.
Got to get out in the mix and scare them up...
When you hear their warning call... then still hunt using a caller.
Got to be real stealthy to sneak up on them in some cases.
Be sure the wind is not working against you, as they'll smell / hear you coming.
