Take a picture of Fallow Deer
I have taken dozens and it does not end the mission. What is the trick to it?

There is certainly a distance to respect I believe ?

You have to use binoculars to focus fallow deer and press "E" key to catch it first, then change to camera and click left buttom of mouse to catch image.

Try this sit in a bush and use your antler rattler to call them in closer make sure your visibility bar is the smallest possible once it's close take the photo that typically works best rather then trying to move up close to it let it move close to you instead

I've had to actually take a picture of one as it ran me over for it to complete the mission. Then, of course, there's another mission down the road that has you take a picture of a fallow within 45m. Just a repeat of the same thing if you ask me. While on that "repeat" mission thought...why, after you kill a bear for a client do you then have to spot the same fur on a different animal (spot 3 bears of different fur colors). Seems like you should get credit for the fur color you just got her. I"ve been passing every brown or cinnamon or honey colored bear I run across (incl one 7 very hard and very large blond/cinnamon) just because of that particular mission. The acrtual black (common) furred ones are now getting a llittle thin on the ground. These missions are crazy. First you get told that the population of blacktails in Balmont is down due to bears and then get told to go kill 2, then 2 males and then 2 males over 79Kg each! What kind of wildlife managment program is the Warden running?

In my experience, the deer don't need to be close to you. As "all my loving" said, take out your binoculars, spot the deer, and then take the picture. I did this and completed the mission from across a field. P.S. You probably know this, but just in case, you can zoom with the camera by using the scroll wheel, just like with scopes and binoculars.

Not all missions though will let you zoom in some require a set distance.

those photo missions are luck, I just did one yesterday where I had to take a picture of one with a lake in the background, I just ran for it with photo mode active at the same time and caught it and the mission updated

Strange that this seems to be so particular (I have not yet come across this mission)
But while I was playing the Silver Peaks story, I have found out that you could just photograph anything, instead of the various pieces of 'evidence' I was tasked to photograph.
Which left kind of a bitter taste in my mouth because I can just see the rationale behind it
"Oh we don't have to actually implement this, the players, thinking it's required, will look for the items and photograph them dutifully, but we're just checking if the player is in this trigger area, not what's being photographed"

That said, maybe it was the fact that special story mode assets had to be photographed, and not 'core' entities like the animals and maybe the animals really get checked.
I have not tested that, but story stuff? Doesn't seem to matter, you could photograph your dogs butt and the NPC would accept it.

I think even the mission giver tells you this, but just in case, the animal has to be presenting you with a full side, so you get to capture the full profile. A photo of the front won't work.
