338 verses 7mm
So I just bought the 338 for elk, I’ve always used the 7mm previously. To my despair I shot an elk at about 250m in the heart lung area and it didn’t drop. Ran off with low blood loss and could not find it. Switched back to the 7m and shot an elk around 290 and it dropped instantly., not the same elk. Is the 338 not as accurate at longer distances? Also hit a cow elk at less than 100m and was not a instant kill. I know the vital areas, just wondering if the 338 is not as accurate as the 7m.
Thanks!

On paper the 7MM is more accurate then the 338.
but cant say i notice any accuracy difference between the two even though it says so in the weapon discription.

Which leads me to ask, did the animals you shot with the 338 line up just like the animal you shot with the 7MM ?

Yeap. Two were eating, shot one with the 7mm then 10 minutes later the other one came back

Hold on

Which ammo do you carry for 7MM and which for 338?

always use poly tips, i find the .338 has more knockdown power than the 7mm but if you hunt moose in russia you need the 7mm, better penetration i guess.
russian moose are armor plated and the .338 dont do much on them there for some reason, in alaska, they drop in their tracks most of the time, there, they laugh and walk away.
but to answer your question, use the poly tips on all rifle ammo.
a wise one named Kai might disagree and with good reason but go for the polys.

Wait..what..No!

338. polymer tip has better penetration then 7MM Polymer tip regardless whether you're in taiga or layton.
I personally favor 7MM for the sole reason that 338. issnt ethical for black bears(Layton) - Reindeer (Taiga) and Red Deer (Hirschfelden)

thats why i carry both and a bow, but go try a .338 vs 7mm on a russian moose.

It says that the bigger gun has worst accuracy. But i think that's about the sway right? Cus that's a lot worst with the big one over the 7mm.

Then i am afraid you missed. or your zeroing might have been off. Either way, i find no difference between the 2 weapons other then that 338 packs a harder punch.

Could be as I noticed more sway probably due to weight of gun. Sticking with the 7mm. Although brownies are more difficult with the 7mm which makes it a challenge, but a fun one.

The 7mm is the best rifle to be honest, when I used it. I never had trouble. But I didn’t get good results from the 338.

Best way to put it is. With the 338 the recoil and weight, make the shots unstable unless you are prone and wait for that perfect moment when the shot settles.

I had this in classic with the 9.3x62 Anschütz 1780 D FL Bolt Action Rifle (Engraved) compared to the 7mm (in classic they called it the Stambecco) I used to use the 9.3 a lot and I kept missing the vitals. I'd take a shot within 100m and I’d get minor hits and I was was like "what gives?" If you read the description for the 7mm "Lightweight, well balanced and extremely accurate". Basically what it means is, the shot will be very stable and accurate. I think they did it this way because everyone assumes the 338 has the best power and penetration it’s the best gun for big game and long distance shots, but in practice it requires a little more patients, timing with the shots.

How many times when using the 338 did you takes they shots on a whim. You saw an animal quickly pulled out the rifle and took the shot without making sure the shot was perfectly settled.
The 7mm is more forgiving and has less sway when aiming. So when you pull the trigger, the swaying doesn't effect the bullets trajectory as much.

I know it kinda of sucks because, in most games the best rifle is the one that cost the most and takes the longest to get the skill level to use.

But with COTW the guns have pros and cons that aren’t in the description. You’ll find out from use.

The best rifles are the 243, 270 and 7mm atm. All the rifles can easily do extreme distance shots, and are very accurate, but the 243 will maintain the integrity for almost all animals and is much lighter in weight, making it easy to aim.
But the 7mm and 338 are red deer, elk level and above. And because the 338 has the best power, it’s offset by it’s bulkiness and weight.

It’s like a weird balancing system that got created while classic was being made.

Stick with the 7mm, it’s got the power, penetration. The 338 has a weight penalty.

Also, the carrying weight does not reflect this. The bows are in rl super light compared to a rifle, yet in your inventory, they takes up similar space.
338 cost 5 carry points, the Hawk Edge compound bow cost 4 :-/

These suggestions are based on experiences in classic and COTW. The heavier the gun the bigger the bang, the harder to use. The more balanced the gun is, the more stable the platform.

The 7mm regent / stambecco has always been better than the other rifles except the 7mm bullpup in classic. I think the peeps that developed it, were in love with it. Or it’s based on a real rifle they used and became infatuated with. It’s always been the best rifle to use, right from when they introduced it for the Ibex in classic.

Hope this help, even tho I know it’s kind of like, “well that kind of sucks :(“

Lol yeah it does suck but thank you for the input. I agree with the 3 guns you mentioned as I carry those and either a bow or crossbow.
Secret Squirrel Jun 22, 2018 @ 5:33am
I stopped using the 338 because of the same thing. It isn't aim or the hunter, the gun is off. The specs on the gun show it has significantly less accuracy, so I assumed that is why it is not hitting precisely where I aim. I spent a lot of time grinding to get that gun and it just sits in my storage. Any yes, I always use poly tips.

I know right :-/ can't tell you how many times I shot something, thinking I definately got those lung's, only to discover I got the spleen or something. Hopefully in time, the dev's will make some new rifles and weapons. We need some more options.

Or make sure you do a spine shot and it doesnt matter, ive taken down moose, elk, bear, etc with .270
