Musk Deer Scent?
Does Musk Deer Scent work for masking your scent against other animals and species of deer like Roe and Fallow?

The musk deer scent does not mask your scent. It is supposed to attract musk deer. However I have not yet been able to attract a single musk deer with it. The description suggests that the wind matters, so maybe we need to use it upwind of the deer to attract it, but who wants to be upwind of the animal when it comes in.

So far, useless for me. Maybe someone can clarify. :-)

It can mask your scent to the target species if you spray the place you're hiding in. It's also a great way to get deer to hide somewhere else and choose which to shoot.

It is my understanding that scents act much like callers. You spray it, and animals in the range get attracted to the spot where you sprayed it. The scent does not follow you. It is different from scent eliminator which you apply to yourself and effect stays with you wherever you go

I find it works best that you use the caller to lure deer to the scent, and the scent is like a glue that keeps your prey in the place you want.

All right, please send me that musk deer caller too...! ;-)

Yeah, there is no caller for musk deer, so you only have scent for luring and it does not work as well as callers

It does work though. I use it when I hear a musk deer, then move sideways and wait for the deer to come.

Do you have to pay attention to the wind for this to work?

In Classic, the scent works in all directions regardless of the wind. In CotW I haven't been successful.

Yes

Yes, you have to pay attenton to the wind. It does make the deer ignore your scent for a while.

Now what? If I am upwind of the animal, it will be alert. I am apparently supposed to use the spray upwind as others said for the animal to smell it. So it smells the scent and me at the same time. Will it now come or not? If I am downwind, it will smell neither me nor the scent, so that is not an option either.

Does the scent spray travel further than my scent? So I need to apply it upwind but some 150m away, then move away? Or does it only work in combination with the scent eliminator?

There is a lot of piece work and some conflicting information in here. Can someone explain in one chunk what they have successfully been doing in the game to use scents please? :steamhappy:

Scent works downwind. So, it is logical to assume that scent eliminator might be helpful. It would be hard to lure animal close this way even with scent eliminator, so I would suggest having mid range weapons when relying on scents.

I tried this myself again, now with the downwind info. I had a musk deer calling downwind. I sprayed and could barely move far to the side when I had three female musk deer trot in. I shot one with the bow and the others ran. After about two minutes another returned again to the scent location which I shot with the revolver.

Downwind worked, and like said didn't even have to move far for the female to react. No scent eliminator used, but this might have to be different for males.

Anyway, thanks all for the info. :-)

Female musk deers are usually Level 1, they would not smell you right away and usually react to scents much better. Males are usually Level 2 and rare Level 3, and those still would take some time to smell you. Smell becomes real issue when you hunt for Level 5 or above, and Level 8 bear will smell you even with scent eliminator 50 meters away, it just takes a bit longer thus giving you a chance to shoot
