Surround Sound
Wondering if I need a new headset for this game?

Directional sound wasn't too important to me (prior to this game) so I went with a bullet proof rugged headset as opposed to best sound quality and been quite happy with it for years.

It's a RL aviation headset that has stereo, but not 5.1 surround sound. When I hear animals walking around, I can't really tell what direction they are coming from. Wondering if that's related to my basic headset stereo setting.

For those with fancier sound headsets, do you get a sense of which direction the sound is coming from? I'd hate to buy a 5.1 headset for this game just to find out the sense of direction of the sound is no better.

You don't need any specific 5.1/7.1 headsets, it's just a marketing gimmick. They are just regular stereo headphones and surround sound is made with software, or USB dongle (sound card).

Even Windows 10 has it's own build in surround software (Windows Sonic for Headphones), doesn't sound that special though. Or you can buy some other software with 15-25€/$.

I would recommend a 7.1 Surround sound headset.

You can def tell where the foot steps come from and even point directly at their location based off the sound.

OK, thanks!
Yes, I get a real sense of direction of sounds. I'm using a 5 or 6 year old Logitech headset and it's great.

I'll have to get me one of those because I'm surrounded by sound and can't tell where they are coming from.

I have Sony headset designed for music, not gaming, and can figure exactly where noise comes from while playing

You might want to upgrade your sound card. I would think directional sound would be coming from the source, which would be the sound card. Just something to think about.

I got a decent SoundBlaster, but don't have the headphones plugged into it. Pain to reach around back, but I may give that a try to see if it works any better. I suspect it won't matter much if my only headphones settings are mono/stereo. ...but worth a shot!

You can find audio extension cords really cheap

Probably could just rewire the forward jacks to connect to the card instead of the moboard. ...just been lazy I s'pose. I'll give it a shot before sinking money into another headset.

I have the razor Tiamat 7.1 headset plugged into the stx sound card. It’s tricky to set up but its pinpoint for direction. I went overboard because of the game but not regretting it one bit.

I did manage to at least get my basic stereo headphones working with the audio jacks, and I do get some (although minimal) feel for whether or not a sound is at least coming from left/right/back/front. So that's an improvement.

I will have to check into a 5.1 or 7.1 headset now. My SB card at least supports 5.1 and has like 4 or 5 different jacks for that. Not sure if it can manage 7.1, but will have to check.

Another happy 7.1 user here. I have both the Sennheiser GSP 600 and 550 and truly love the effect.

I'm using a stereo gaming headset plugged into a motherboard USB port. Should I not get at least some stereo effect this way?
Or do I need a Surround Sound headset plugged into the same port?
Or do I need to buy a Soundblaster Card as well??
