How to hunt Cape/water Buffilo Safley?
hey all i'm trying to get my Gold score Cap buffilo for my trophy lodge to go with my Gold Water buffilo i got today, but i've run into a great promlem, the buffilo are more dangerous than lions! i've had both buffilo charge me on mer sight even at over 100m often they seem to have homing trackers to hunt you down even when your perfictly hidden even if they're not the one shot? and trying to stalk them through the undergrouwth has proven more fatal than not, i've been killed over 10 times today! and when the buffilo hit you your toast, i'm lucky to survie teh 1st hit only for them to turn on the spot and gore me again, So How to hunt them safley and collect your kills without the rest of the herd comming for revenge? I've been using the new 300 but most Buffs will take the hits from both soft or hard rounds even when hit hard in the chest/side often goring you or running over younder loosing my score and making me risk the rest of the herd just to find their cospes... can people hear help me? PS.. i'm not wearing a backpack...

Here is what i do to harvest buffalo,
first find them, get in front of them and wait for them to come by. using cover scent and the wind to my advantage.
You should be able to harvest a nice one and get killed most likely. but they'll come back and you should be able to harvest a few more, if you move in slowly.

i use the 454 pistol and crossbow with 600 bolts and just go in after them that has worked for me.

They don't go into the water..

.338 w/ polymer tips work well, also the 600 grain bolt and arrows, but are limited in range and clean kills. the 470 will drop them on the spot but you have to be pretty close like the arrows or bolts.

So the heavy hitters on them ok.. i just tryed again this time with the 45-70 it didnt go well... i thought i could out fox them by hiding in a ground layout blind in a open area where they need to come into the open to pass through and then pop up lie a jack in the box shoot then hide again in my layout box. ..... not so cleaver as the 45-70 bullet barly hurt him and as hide watching the frist one retreat with barly a scratch a second raored out the bushes from behind and killed me IN my layout blind? turns out not only can the insane buggers still dectect me even hidden in it but can kill me too might as well used a coffin becasue they buried me in it deep in the bog mud XD, well back to the drawing board and come back with a crossbow and a tripod stand, thats saved me from lions before hopes the big buggers can't reach me.. would use a treestand but the lower bog regions have no sutable trees..

Autisticsrule, I have had great luck with the 12 gauge shotgun & scope loaded with slugs

.470, crouch and search. When you find one, crawl up close..no more than 20 metres, then shoot it.

If it charges put the next barrel into the tip of it's nose, and reload.

You can dodge them if you are fast enough.

Rule no 1.
If you hunt bovines, sooner or later you gonna die.

I use the 470 0r the 600g crossbow bolt. Double lung shot is my preferred aiming point, 50 to 60m with the crossbow and out to 100 with the 470. I usually stalk carefully down through bush valley( using the camera on full magnification to scan ahead ) and end up at the big inlet at the north. Having water and feed zones helps a lot as I move from one to another depending on the active times. Make sure the wind is in your face. They usually drop with one shot, but the one you havnt seen is the most dangerous.

The 12g with slugs will stop them but takes more than two shots usually. I use the pump when in panic mode, and keep hitting them again before they recover from each proceeding shot ... untill they finally go down. Dont stand too close to them, they usually make a last effort lurch from on the ground and can still injure you. Scary stuff sometimes.

Have got my success rate up to about 10 to 1 in my favour.

This is the correct answer.

These beasts are huge and pretty dopey, in that respect they are easy prey. Something has got to be hard about killing them, and the challenge is to get close. The alternative is use the .300 or .388 and get a brain shot from further out. But the .470 is so much fun.

And getting them to charge you and getting killed is gaming the system tbh.... you'd not do that in real life. I'd take no pride in getting a diamond that way....

Shoot them at distance. 7mm - 300 and 338 can easily drop them as far as 300+ meters if you just know where to shoot.

Buffalo are similar to wolves in the sense that if you end up in the midst of them and panic you are a gonner.

If you stay calm and move and aim well you will survive and they won’t.

Often with buffalo they stay in the roughage and you kind of end up getting charged at, but just take your time and aim well, step aside when needed and go for the brain you should be fine.

Same with wolves, if you are surrounded and rush shots you will die, if you take your time and aim well, more often than not you will live.

The most efficient way might be shots to the brain and heart, that will give you 100% quick kill with a single hit and will prevent them from charging you, as long as you use a high enough calibre. Tried a .357 to its brains once and the bull still charged me twice before dying, hehe. I've successfully killed them with a single shot to the head and heart with .45-70, 7 mm, .44 revolver and above. But they move their head quite a bit and the heart is not always easy to hit.

The easiest way would probably be 2x double lung with the .454 from within 50 m (the closer the better in terms of effect), using hard cast ammo. My advice is to get out to the shooting range and practice at 35-50 m until you get two quick follow up shots into the bullseye of the target. After the first shot the animal will recoil from the hit so you'll have to adjust your aim for the second shot if you want to hit another double lung, so both speed and accuracy are important here.

In the field mind your approach to the animal or herd, so you get cover nearby, like some trees and stones you can hide behind in case one other animal charges you. Then crawl from bush to bush, or from behind a tree to another tree. Once behind a tree or inside a bush crouch to get a visual on your prey and then crawl on and repeat the process, until you get into a good position/distance to shoot. Try to get on the animal side, aim for centre of lungs and shoot twice just like you practised on the shooting range. You should get 100% quick kill and an almost instantly dead Buffalo, as long as you shoot within 50 m.

I've had my fair share of Water Buffalo kills and haven't died from one yet by doing as I've described above. Haven't hunted them since before the Yukon update, so maybe some things changed since then, but I hope this helps you.

The heart position is a bit peculiar but once you learn the visual references it's not that hard to locate (grass permitting visual on it).

Here's an example from Parque Fernando on engaging multiple Buffalo. I've used trees for cover and got hit only once by the fifth that caught me reloading.

Went on a buff hunt after posting previously on this thread.
First killed some gemsbok to clear the hunting pressure then dropped into bush valley and hunted north towards the river keeping the wind in my face. As I said before, I used the 470 and 600g xbow bolts for 15 buffs. Never died at all.

Got charged twice and hit once, not fatally.

In the beginning I died a few times too. Once you get to know where they hang out, at what times and which direction they travel it all gets a lot easier.
