Guns here vs The Hunter Classic
I have many hours and dollars in the Hunter Classic. I've been playing this version for a few weeks after buying on sale to try out. I also have a few DLC's including the 2 gun DLC's.

I have just about all the rifles and a few other type guns like a crossbow, shotgun w the third barrel xxx x 74R. Here's my question:

When I needed a gun to knock down big animals before I had the shotgun with the third barrel. I seen the .338 and the 45-70 lever action. In the Hunter Classics these 2 guns would bring down a Bison or Moose with no problems.

In this game they barely bring down Buck Deer. Everything else is a long hike through the woods tracking. I've blown a hole in a Moose or an Elk from 30 yards right in the kill zone with a 45-70 or .338 and it'll say flesh wound with a small spot of blood. Now, not all the time, but most.

I keep the 470 handy now for those close shots. Bears I don't have much problems with, they seem easy to knock down or they drop pretty close by.

Anyway, one of these games is off on the kill power vs the other. I'm not a hunter or a gun owner, so I'm asking chat here. Which game is closer to correct?

I'm enjoying this game and it's a lot less money over time. With over 3000 hrs in theHunter Classics I kinda like it also. It's one of my watch TV while playing games when no one is around, so the hours mount up when you're retired.

thanks
g

Not a hunter in real life however i am sure there is a bug with the damage on cotw,so i think classic must be more like real damage

Dont even begin to think the guns in either game are representative of their real life counterparts.
Most all the guns are grossly underpowered and the comparisons between the different calibers and the resultant damage are completely misrepresented.
Its a game and you have to play with the tools they have given you.
So, what you have to do is find the weapon that does the job the most efficiently for each animal and its scoring system and go with that. And in COTW make sure your using the poly tipped ammo for the best penetration with all your guns.

The best weapons for hunting in both games are the bows. In COTW I get a two fold better result using the crossbow with its three different weight bolts than any of the rifles or shotguns.
And that is another anomaly, not only can you drop a water buff or cape buff on the spot with a double lung shot, but hit him an the hind leg and follow the blood long enough and you will eventually find it dead ... in either game.

As a 70 year old ex meat hunter and goverment culler with more than 45 years in the field I could fill two pages with the anomalies I see in both games.
In real life I have shot hundreds of red deer with a mini 14 in cal 223 and 95% of those were clean 1 shot kills. Ive used most popular calibers from .22 to 30.06 and none of the game rifles perform anywhere close to the real thing.

Its "a game is a game is a game" Dont go looking for real life parallels.... and just enjoy it for what it is. A great way to pass the time while youre waiting for God.

Yes, Dan is the Man, everything is a game mechanic, don't go looking for real ballistics here, but it is fun.

I use the drilling (shotgun with the third barrel) for larger game, moose, elk, red deer, bison. I use the mosin for pretty much everything else other than red fox. If I'm not rushing my shot I often drop the animal or have minimum tracking. I have read of a bug lately with low bleed rates on good shots but I haven't had that happen so far.

The shooting in this game is much more about shot placement than weapon power. The weapons are pretty much balanced in a way so that you'll never have that one weapon that you can rely on to take down everything easily, even if it would in real life.... although as one poster here commented, the Mosin is good for many things (although it depends on your aim). The trade-off is that the AI isn't all that challenging. It doesn't scare off nearly as easily as it would in real life (or in some cases as easily as it would in classic) so the increased difficulty from the "nerfed" weapon power is off-set substantially by the overly tame and "un-timid" AI.

Commenting on the 45-70..... this is, IMO, the best weapon to take down large game within 75 meters. Try to get good shot placement with the first shot with it and be ready for quick followup shots, and don't worry too much about integrity because it shares the same integrity values as the 270.... which is very lenient for a gun of its caliber.

I play many different styles of games so I don't expect realism. And Dan I'm also 70 years old and been gaming since games were a DOS. Maybe they figured the people playing theHunter Classic wouldn't play a more causal hunting game where the animals run up and say hi. And their probably right now that I've tried the game.

I like the new graphics, but not the game play as much. I'm a tree stand guy, so that was a minus also. I hate hunting blinds. I understand the tree stand and triangle stand may be on the way. But I looked around, i don't see that many trees in this game for a tree stand.

I use a crossbow a lot in the Classic from the tree stand with a caller. I like here you can call a bear as I've maxed out the bears in the Classic as far as points except the Grizzly/Polar. Here I'm also using the Drilling 3-barrel for big animals and the .338 for smaller like deer along with the 45-70. I carry the 470 also for up close and personal animals. In the Classic these were my favorite 2 guns for long shots. Seems crazy using them on deer, except the Red Deer of course.

I'll probably just stick with theHunter Classic since I own about everything. But 2 new racing games just came out that'll probably keep me busy all summer. I play a lot of survival games and finance games also. (Not enough gaming time in the day.) As I'm also helping a friend build a '37 Chevy hot rod. I just wired the car from scratch with a wiring harness, that was fun.

Ok, so neither hunting game really represents the correct gun power to animal. In a game like this it makes no sense to not match the gun power/animals close to real life. As it really wouldn't be that hard to formulate.

Happy gaming
g

One thing I like is you can shoot any animal with any gun. I don't care about points. I shot a rabbit yesterday with the .338 because that's what I had in my hand. silly wabbit .......

That at least is one thing that is realistic. I have taken so many rabbits for the pot, by taking off their heads with 223. 22.50 ,270 and even 30.06. You still get all the edible parts with minimal damage.
LOL.

I grow tired of folks comparing this game to classic. If classic is so good...please go play it.
