Having lots of trouble hunting Coyotes
How do I find them easier? They aren't at their rest zones

If you are at a need zone at a correct time: hide a place with good visibility, use the caller and wait... wait... wait. I've scared many because I didn't wait long enough.

The easiest way to find them would be, to run till you hear a warning call. You should then stop, use the caller and hide! (or maybe hide first xD)

Until recently, I didn't like hunting coyote and red fox. Their sizes makes them harder to notice and they take their time, before they get close - and they might approach you from a different direction.

Now that I understand their behavior better, I enjoy hunting them more.

from far away. If You hear a warning from one. Crouch and face the direction use the binoculars. It can be a bit of a waiting game. The small predators are the hardest in each map for Me as well. Having the far zero perk helps.

Don't rely on need zones when hunting coyotes. They really roam around a lot so you can spot them almost anywhere.

If you run, they will spook from far away and flee long before you could see them. Walking or better speed crouching might be the best way to search for them, listen for coyote warning calls or you could even hear mating calls if you're not too loud.

As soon as you hear them, stop or even go prone. Use jackrabbit caller and then crouch to the nearest cover. You should be looking for minimal visibility, tiny grey line, but flat line would suffice, they just won't come as close. Keep using caller every minute or so and observe surroundings until you see coyote looking for you.

If you want higher trophy one, don't shoot right away. As they occasionally travel in groups, higher level males will approach later. Be patient. It might take 4-6 minutes before you see coyote after you started calling.

Occasionally, they never come close. It depends on their level and landscape. High trophy animals don't go into open areas, they want to remain in cover. If there is no sufficient cover between you and them, they won't approach. In this case you might hear their mating call again, meaning they stopped searching for you. Relocate and call again.

P.S. And watch the wind. They have really good smell so they don't really need to be inside green wind cone to smell you - even if they are on the edge or more to the side, they will still smell you.

Go to the Teekan Forest (burnt forest) and surrounding area.
Make lots of noise or drive an ATV and they will find you.

Some may run off... But not all will.

Prepare to be killed. ; )

Better have the tripod dlc if you hope to survive ! Lol

Those will be wolves, not coyotes

+1 Great post.

Also what i do when possible is climb on top of a rock or fallen tree and lay down. That little bit of elevation makes them easier to spot. Or you can buy the tree stand DLC and carry a tripod, but i've never seen the point, takes up too much inventory space, and i'd rather be out tracking than sitting.

As I remember, especially in the burned Forrest there are Wolves, but too Coyotes.
I shot several among my wolve hunting in the burned forrest.
One time I even shot two Coyotes in between two minutes (in the Burned Forrest). They didn't care...

It seems like the only way to notice them is from their warning call. It is so hard to spot them first before they spot me. Not to mention they rarely come close even I hide stay still and do the calling. I do capable hunt them down only when the terrain is big with small obstacle trees and such so when they do warning call, I still have chance spot them with binocular.

I can't imagine hunting rare one as they said they do not make warning call

no you didn't, you shot fox. Only place to hunt Coyotes is Layton Lakes.

I got mine for that mission near the lookout tower in Cheelah, then go south from there to the lake for the 2nd. They're most active at night from dusk till dawn.

I suppose it's the same vualez mission that I'm stuck on... when you have to kill two coyotes. I killed one and I even have a need zone (a resting place). But after killing that one I can't find another one, not even in their need zone at the time specified

I love hunting yotes because they suit my style of hunting and pay well (all the dogs really).

Since I walk a lot, if I get a call I immediately look to see if I have open (read "shootable") ground between me and the call. It's often a simple case of hunker down, preferably prone and call back. They have a habit of walking in and stopping so bino' the area you expect them to come out the entire time. You're watching for the little movements because that's often the only way you see them. A good trick is use P (camera) on max zoom and just watch. You need to commit to watching because sure as eggs are eggs the yote' will be standing there and as soon as you move he'll bolt.

Night is good for this with the light because when they get close they leave tracks. You can see leaves dropping or very subtle grass movements. Stay still and wait.

I also find and shoot them around lakes a lot. I always pack a .243 with Argus scope, creep into a lake from as high as possible and scan the opposite shore. It's often a 250m+ shot but if you're fast you can often get 2 or 3 as they run along the shore.

In any case, they spook very easy, even if you're perfect to the wind, scented and mostly hidden so learning to find them by sight, preferably at range, and being able to set up and shoot quickly are desired skills for successful hunts. Wiley? Be Wilier :)

I just did this using a new technique I've been testing. I used one of those lie down ground blinds and set up in an area where land bridges out into water so I have a clear view all around me, water at my back out to about 50-60m minimum.

I did this south of the lake for the Cheelah mission. I had already setup a tent nearby, advanced to midnight and simply waited, making a call about every 2 minutes. They come in real close when you do it at night. They usually call as they get close so just watch that area very carefully.

Take home is *absolute* stealth and silence. Like you would for real :)

Problem is that every time I hear them the wind is exactly from me to them so there is no chance really that they would come for the caller. Guess that`s why they are making the warning call because they smell me.
