Anything over 50 metres is dull.
The reasoning was that I couldn't see definitive evidence from claims made that one rifle was more accurate or more effective than the other (you can find claims both ways). That said, the game itself says the .338 has an accuracy rating of 10, while the .300 is 80.
So I recently purchased the .300 because the game says it's more accurate, and because it has a 4-round magazine compared to the single-shot .338. When you suddenly get charged by that cape buffalo you didn't know was in the trees just over there, four shots can be a blessing.
When I've saved the (rather high) purchase price of the .470, I'll likely give it a try out, but I like the ability to reach out a little on occasion, especially with these larger animals that prove dangerous if you screw up the shot, and I understand the .470 doesn't have much range.
Right now I'm hunting the Savannah with the crossbow for anything up to class 3, and the .300 for buffalo and lion. I haven't shot at a lion yet with the .300, but I was dropping them with the Drilling 9.3X74R, so I'm sure they'll go down easily enough with the .300. I was having trouble with the buffalo and the Drilling, however. But since getting the .300, I've dropped buffalo reliably at 150m (the effective range).
To be honest, I do in fact frequently find myself shooting buffalo within 75m. They love to stay among the trees, it seems. That's within the .470's effective range, and despite the fact it doesn't have a scope, the reflex sight available would be fine, I suspect, at those ranges.
And the damage the .470 does... The .300 Polymer-tip has penetration 42, expansion 14. The .470 gives you 100 and 23. I mean dayum! If you hit it almost anywhere, you'll kill it.
And it's a two-shotter. However, with a recoil of 100, it is probably going to take you a week to reacquire your target... and your hearing.
But for now, I'm running around with the .300 and Argus scope. I often travel with the rifle in hand, and iron sights (for the next time a damn buffalo surprises me). It's a very functional tool.
And a bow for everything 3 and below... too much fun.
Now I'm curious too... ;-)
With the last perk of the rifle "tree" you can zoom in a little bit, if you hold your breath. With this sight its possible to shoot till 75m(or above) with the 470
Focus shot
"Holding your breath increases zoom when using rifles with iron, red dot and holographic sights."
i hope this will help you.
edit: its a specific sight for the 470 with the african dlc.
edit2: to the topic i prefer the 338, because it has more range( i just got the .300,). But the .470 is a good option for buffalo.
Guess I'd better take a look through the store...
