For Beginners like me, buy the .243 polymer-tip bullet ASAP
This will pack more power and will down a deer in a single shot

*note: if you miss a vital organ the deer won't be that far away.

tip: make sure to double lung the deer for easy instant kill

another tip: layton has a lot of game, perfect for us beginners

Yes it will but then it costs you cash for those rounds the starter ammo is totally free. So you can pretty much waste the ammo and the 243 can down even the largest animals if hit right deer it should drop pretty easily. So why waste cash that could be better saved up to buy a more power rifle like the 270 to start with.

The 270 is overkill for some animals, wont get 100% integrity.

Yeah the free ammo at the beginning is a godsend for those learning the game.

For beginners like most players, patiently wait for an animal to turn broadside (right side is slightly better because of a liver) and shoot a bit closer to the front from the center of a body, dead middle vertically.

P.S. Don't shoot moose until you get at least .270

P.S.S. Yes, most beginners will still go for polymer ammo

When I first started, the .270 was already in my storage... the "Stradavarious" (sorry if that's misspelled). Really wish they'd let us sell guns back that we don't want. I like the looks of the .270 Huntsman a wee more to be honest and would rather have that one, but... don't want to clutter the storage with different variants of the same rifle. Anyway, what I did starting out was I got the .243 Polymer ammo ASAP and hunted Blacktail and Coyotes w/ the occasional Whitetail. Then when I unlocked the Polymer ammo for the .270 I grabbed that and shifted towards Whitetail and Blackbear.

Though, with the DLC's... I'm usually carrying the Mosin or the 30-06 unless I'm bow hunting. Or, I have out the .22, Rabbit Hunting. Got my 1st Diamond the other day, White-Tailed Jackrabbit with a score of 995.

right but then you have the 243 to back that up point is you want better weapons so you can then concentrate on the harder animals making you even more cash and XP. 243 is mainly good for smaller stuff and while some small animals pay out well like foxes for instance not all do so you want to upgrade your weapon ASAP rather then ammo.

I'm saying this as a veteran player with over 700 hours in game and maxed out. Upgrading the weapon should be first priority along with callers. A free softpoint will take down an animal just as easily as a poly tip if you hit the animal properly.

But while a poly will take down even a moose you really want a stronger weapon to handle the bigger game that gives you more cash for the bang

Like I said for me at least poly on the 243 is just a waste of good money better spent on upgrading weapons or buying callers to help lure in new species.

Yes, this is true... but, starting a fresh game now. You have .243 starting out with. But, you also have scent eliminator, Roe Deer Caller, Deer Grunt (I think it's the grunt caller) and Bleet Caller.

If starting on a map like... Layton for example. You're set on everything you need. Scent Eliminator, and Deer Callers. Predator Caller for Coyotes unlocks fairly quick with a cheap 6k for purchase. Leaving only needing a caller for Moose / Predator for Bear and an Elk caller. Which all unlock at fairly high rank.

.243 is excellent for Blacktail and Coyote, good with Whitetail if shot is accurate. Polymer just makes it even better in this regard.

.270 is already owned, it's in storage... so you can equip it as soon as you go to an Outpost.
________________________
If you own the DLC... you can hunt every animal in Layton, simply with just the purchase of ammo and of course the callers as they unlock.

.22LR - Ducks and Rabbit
7.62X54R - Ranging from Coyote to Whitetail Deer
30-06: Blackbear and Elk
9.3X74R is excellent for Moose.

I don't think the 243 poly ammo is a waste of money. It's very cheap and unless you're only killing like 1 animal per hour you're still going to always be making a profit. I'd definitely recommend someone getting the poly ammo so they can take down deer much faster and spend much less time tracking, thus being able to focus on killing more animals in a shorter amount of time.... which will farrrrr out-benefit the use of free, much crappier ammo.

I actually usually just skip the 270 and save it for later, since you can use the 243 polys for the majority of what you can use the 270 for (albeit the 270 is certainly a better gun).... and focus on the 7mm as the second gun. Although now, the way the 30.06 is, if I started over again I think I'd skip the 7mm and get the 30.06 since it's essentially a better version of the 7mm (at least the way it is in the game). But that's only IF you have WP3. I'm talking about someone who's starting fresh w/o any DLC weapons. The order of things changes a bit if you have all of the weapon packs.

Right but being this is a thread tip for beginners it's better I think to use the free ammo also for the fact it forces to you have to learn to better place your shots rather then just go the easy route. You place it well drops on the spot you screw up your shot then you get to learn to improve your tracking abilities. Dropping smaller animals on the spot with poly sort of robs you of some of the learning in the game of tracking. Cause if you can't track an animal poly is sort of pointless unless you stumble upon an animal or herd/flock/pack.
GothicKing13 Sep 24, 2019 @ 10:46am
Aye, that's true... the .270 is better than the .243 in power. But, just starting out with a fresh game. You start with the .270 in your storage. I was just stating the saving up for the rifle isn't needed, as you already own the .270. Matter fact, since the tru-patch. I was messing around, better knowledge of what I was doing and what perks/skills I wanted to aim for. A fresh start, has plenty of equipment to get started with. Which is why I don't feel it's a waste to go for the Polymer's. The polymer tipped ammo is great, excellent for those "like me" who want to be patient enough to go for the double lung. I've hit a Blacktail deer at the perfect angle with the regular "free" ammo and it only get one lung. The polymer I get double lung each and every shot I take. Steady aim and patience is the key to the game. Also, with the right animal... unless you buy hundreds of rounds of the .243 polymer's you will recover that cost with 1 animal, 2 tops.

Starting the game: FRESH
.243: Starting Rifle
12Ga Shotgun: Inventory
.357 Revolver: Inventory
Roe Deer Caller: Inventory
Deer Bleat Caller: Inventory
Deer Grunt Caller: Inventory (though, this one may be dlc equipment... not sure)
Scent Eliminator: Inventory

.270 Stradivarius: Storage

This... I will agree with. Didn't even think about the tracking aspect. I've had to track a fair few due to poor shot placements. Tracked enough, following their tracks in game has become second nature. Have the perfect shot, and just as I fire the weapon the animal takes a step... throwing the shot way of target. Or the couple times... steady aimed, perfect lung shot, ready to take the shot and ALAS, just as I go to press the button on my mouse to take the shot... a cold chill races down my back making me flinch. (I've had this happen quite a few times... I was looking down a nice buck one time. Had a cold chill... took me almost an hour to track him down. I almost cried with that one. lol

Yeah but unless they are giving this away now this was an earned rifle that new players won't get as was the reward for the community event when HC came out. So most new players won't have this just what you had listed minus the Stradivarius.

No I believe this is an ingame caller not DLC as I don't remember having to pay anything to get it.

Do you start with the 270 now? I haven't restarted in a few months.
