Headshots don't count?
I shot one deer in the neck and one in the head, they both got up and walked away, wtf?

EDIT: I've been follwoing the tracks for miles but I still haven't found a carcass.

WHere are shooting them in the head??? You must hit the brain which is fairly small it is much easier and more ethical to go the lungs and heart.

I'm fairly sure I shattered its brain but it wandered off, now I'm follwoing blue arrows all over the map. This game is so tedious.

Is it just me or are there barely any animals on the map? I walked like two giant circlular patterns and only found 3 deer...

Shooting an animal in the head is always a risky choice and not advised. The skull of most animals is very thick and can easily block a shot, especially if you are using a low powered weapon.

This is a hunting game that tries to simulate hunting for the most part, and as such, it may seem slow or tedious to someone looking for a run and gun shooter.

If you're looking for a fast-paced shooter, this game may not be for you.

A: A headshot is only a option if you are fairly close and the animal is not moving. Also if you know the location of the brain, most animals have very small brains that are easily missable.
Go for lungshots or spine/neck shots. With higher caliber weapons you can go for heartshots too.

B: You write that there are very few animals.
First, the most important rule. DONT RUN. Seriously, NEVER, EVER run.
Walk everywhere and crouch when you hear calls or get close to a target.
Nothing scares off animals more in this game then running around. You literally scare hundreds of animals around you who you will never even know are there because of that.
And dont use the ATV except for unlocking outposts or if you dont care about hunting in that region.

Also stay downwind so your scent does not alarm animals in your path.
You need to look out for three factors, noise, visibility and your scent.
This is a hunting simulation, not an arcade game.
When i started out i thought the game was nearly empty and it took me 45 minutes to find a single animal. By now i actually think there are far too many animals. Its really just a perspective of experience.

You say you haven't encountered many animals, check in the Codex, there is a category for spooked animals. This will give you an idea of how many animals you had a potential to see.

I totally feel your pain man! i tried the hunter classic back in the day before i learned hunt in real life. that aside i hated the game. i couldnt find nothing at all, it was promtly uninstalled. i actually feel kinda sad about that as if i knew then what i know now i know i would of loved it!
but back on topic. as said above noise is a killer! the animals are sooo well camoflauged its unreal. ive walked past big deer before within a stones throw and i didnt know they were there. all i got was heavy hoof beats as it ran away. The only time i use sprint is when on my way to unlock an outpost and im not hunting anything.
If your new to the game i have a Youtube channel. search for Mooncatt79 my first vid is a little more like a tutorial for new players, it might be useful for you.
the first vid i aplogise for the sound quality as i had a crap headset.....this is fixed in the next vid. 2nd vid is more of a mission and a hunt, and the 3rd vid is what you can expect if you keep playing ;)

I'm totally not used to hunting games in general, I mean, I can sneak in video games but they're mostly more action-oriented like Elder Scrolls, Metal Gear Solid, or whatever, so I have to take my time for this one.

The only other hunting game I ever played was Ted Nugent's Wild Hunting which was awesome (back in the day), and that was a long time ago.

hey bub. A skeleton head of those animals except fox and maybe boar. They have a thick bone structures and like said on top here. Shooting at their lungs and heart is much more efficient kill. Instead of headshot try to shoot the spinal cord situated mostly in middle of the neck depending wich animal

The head shot is kinda hard.... its like you have to take off the TOP of the head, like your trying to scalp them.

From the back works better, if its a head shot you want.
