I'm still hyped because they really don't have to change much in order to please everybody... but you know... you can see why people on twitch are calling it farcry 5: call of the wild xD
I'll be watching your upload after the beta giveaways :)
The way the sounds are located, the tracks, the way the feeding and sleeping zones are hunted out after harvesting the area, the x-ray view of the harvest.
I wonder if they know just how close this game actually is?
Someone will cry copycat at some point.
Watching the streams and Hoocairs' youtube it does look nice, but my first thought was Cabela's Pro Hunts, it really does "share some design points" quite a bit. For me the jury is still out and I guess I will decide after the release, but based on what I have seen today I would prefer to stick with theHunter Classic.
Don't be that way
One thing I noticed within the first 10 minutes is something that's plagued a lot of releases, and that's ultra settings, the game looks worse in ultra. Certain items need turning off like the fog and the world lighting (can't remember the exact name). With those off the graphics really wake up.
I do have serious concerns though. The game, like I said has an incredible canvas. EW have done almost all the leg work required in order to make this a perfect game; they just need to fix the gameplay.
They firstly need to have more faith in players. People aren't going to quit the game because it doesn't hold your hand enough... people want a challenge and they want room to develop their real in-game skill and knowledge. The whole 'feeding' and 'resting' zones set on the map for animals are just silly. Just to clarify, i like that the animals have feeding and resting implemented into their AI, but these areas should not be simply pointed out to you on the map. I say remove anything that points you in the direction of a feeding or resting zone. Let the community figure out where animals tend to feed and rest. What's the point in having complex behaviour systems for animals when all the joy is sucked out of it by telling us how it works? Again, it breaks immersion and cheats the player out of an otherwise rewarding experience.
The call locator, while it was something that was in classic (albeit implemented through the huntermate for better immersion), i just don't feel is a necessary feature. The player can easily determine where the call came from and can gauge the distance more accurately with practice. I say just remove this visual aid for better immersion and less of a cabela's feel. This system, again, cheats players out of a rewarding experience. Even without perks, the call locator is superior to any call on classic, simply because the location is given on screen as opposed to a top-down view on the huntermate. i.e. you don't have to worry about translating what you see on the huntermate map to what you see in the world. Once you try it, it'll be clear that this offers too much of an advantage.
You also don't seem to be able to place equipment on the map atm. I'm pretty sure this is simply because it's in beta, however this would be a deal-breaker for many classic players, I'm sure.
The perks, as you are all probably aware by now, are just a little ♥♥♥♥. They're too fallout 4. By this, I mean there's too much imagination in them. I won't say much on this, because I'm almost certain that there's going to be a massive re-work on the perks due to such widespread negative feedback.
So in general, all hope is not lost. On the whole, there needs to be less hand-holding. When i first started thehunter, I couldn't track, I couldn't shoot and I scared off everything before I even raised my weapon... but my god, that first mule female was so satisying.. and as my knowledge developed I really had a sense of progression. They need to dial things back a notch and recognise that the thing holding thehunter classic back wasn't the gameplay features; it was the payment model. They've fixed the payment model, updated the graphics, but they've made thegameplay far too 'user friendly' and it simply doesn't feel like a sim anymore. To any EW devs, listen to the classic community... Focus on thehunter classic's strengths. People played it because it was a sim... if you don't focus fully on the sim aspect, the game will flop or at best be another mixed-review steam failure... and nobody wants that.
No one could put it better than this. Classic would be a smash hit if it weren't for the payment model. I've been playing classic since 2009, and it's a great game... But a wife and 2 kids later, I just can't justify paying for it every year.
CotW will do great if it is Classic 2.0 rather than a whole new idea.
I am enjoying it so far but I just hope it has the lastability that classic has, just without the payment model.
