Your best bet is to simply quit and reload. That kind of thing happens when the game decides to teleport the animal to someplace on the reserve and leave a straight line of tracks between the two points. You will not catch it, even on an ATV.

Basically, you lost the lotto on that kill. At that point I hopped on an ATV and chased the tracks all the way to Tichenau, then down to the sound end of Schonfeldt, and then back east to Rathenfeldt. On an ATV, after 'walk-very low bleed-drinking zone' tracks.

You should suspect this happens if your trail shows very high frequency, repeating patterns, straight travel lines, and no droppings. Assuming, of course, you aren't tracking downwind.
I was persistent. I eventually cornered it against the east waterline in rathenfeldt and got a second shot on it. Once an animal leaves render distance and enters 'simulation', it stops bleeding, it seems.
