(Sorry... I get long winded sometimes.) :D
I see where he’s coming from. Although I personally wouldn’t NOT buy a new map because of it, and while I do decry the whole “gaming” approach to COTW, this is something that really detracts from it. Regardless of whether or not you support/decry the gaming mentality behind the development of COTW, maxing XP at Lv60 creates issues that some people are worried about.
Let me be perfectly clear – I’m HAPPY with a Lv60/XP cap, as it frees me from the whole gaming mentality of COTW. I’ve got everything there is in game and XP is pointless right now. But knowing how the gaming industry/mindset works, that might not be the case for long.
There is/was a reason for XP in the game - there are items that are XP based, forcing everyone into that bit of “gaming mentality”. I don’t WANT XP to be required for a weapon/pack/item, but that’s the way things were set up. It’s the idea that there MIGHT be a change to the Lv60 cap that worries/bothers some people. If we see future XP based content, why on earth would anyone wish to do anything extra to bring in XP if it’s wasted right now (other than the normal harvesting of animals)?
Currently I only SP hunt the Layton side and use the European side for MP with my friend back home in the US. I do that to keep things fresh and fun when I do play with him. Now that there is a new map coming, we will switch to that map for MP and I will play the European map in SP. But I reached Lv60 on Layton alone. Think about all of the outposts, POI, found items, missions that await me on the European side… that will bring me absolutely no XP whatsoever.
I know for a fact that I’m going to cringe each time I discover a POI, open an outpost, or finish a mission by happenstance, knowing I’m not getting XP from it that others have/will. (And I hate that the whole gaming mentality has made me feel like that.)
Now there’s going to be a completely NEW map that will bring me no XP whatsoever?
I don’t NEED XP right now, and that’s not why I play the game. But that little fly buzzing around, the idea that they may eventually change things, has caused me to purposefully NOT do things that would result in XP right now, simply because XP MIGHT be required later on.
I'm not looking forward to an eventual "Are you F'n kidding me!?!?!?!" moment, when they remove the cap and toss in XP based content after I've been playing for... umm... many hours (more than anyone should have been), and completed countless XP based tasks that brought me 0 XP.
Let's be serious here the gating of lures/calls for specific species by character level is one of the worst aspects of this otherwise immersive hunting game. Having skills/perks is great fun to unlock, but not being able to hunt Moose with calls because some menu tells me I need to be level 36-or something is downright stupid.
At the same time... I like unlocking skills/perks, but the lvl60 cap is pretty damn annoying in that aspect as you cant unlock everything.
I reckon the developers realize this. They could raise the lvl cap with a new map release that provides the required xp amount and more. Or keep the lvl the same, but find different ways to introduce new items like they are doing with the upcoming map and having it tied to a quest.
