Moose
Are they immune to the .243 starter? Shot one in the shoulder from 125-150 yards and saw it fall then get back up and run, when i got to the spot it was "flesh wound " and "very low" bleed rate, tracked it for 10 mins, found it again, and shot it twice, once in the chest and once in the rump as it was running, it fell both times, and again " very low" bleed rate, tracked it for a half hour, and it was stuck in a bush next to a rock, unloaded 5 rounds into it as fast as possible, even when it was doing to falling and getting up animations, and again, it ran off. Tracked it until i got bored and then gave up. 7 rounds into it and nada other than flesh wounds. What the heck?

You need to score a vital hit (lungs/heart/brain) for the game to register that the moose will soon be brown bread. But yes it’s silly as seven bullets in real life would somewhat slow down a moose!

You need a perfect shot for the .243 to be effective on Moose. I prefer the .7mm.

yeah the .243 will not work well on a moose, i agree with Ram, you should save up for the 7mm, that works. we are currently having issues with the most powerful rifle, the .338 mag doing any damage to them so we have fallen back on the 7mm which seems to work. but yeah, i would hold off on taking any moose with the .243 unless you have that perefct heart shot, and even then, be ready for a long walk tracking.

You can kill a moose with the .243. Eventually. I hit one in the intenstine and tracked it for over 20 mins or so. Eventually found it lying dead. I only achieved a score of 303 for it. My first moose I killed with a .243 I achieved a score of 806 with an organ vital hit.

The first moose i actually downed was with .223. The trick with the lower calibers is shot placement, and on a moose you need a heart shot. If you look at a moose the is a lump at the lowest point in the chest. Directly behind the lump between the lower shoulder blades is the heart. Shoot for the lump head on, or 12 inches or so behind it in a 3/4 head on, and you can down them with the smaller calibers.

The bounding volumes have been bugged in some way. It looks like the bullet bybasses frequently all the organs even you should get a vital hit. Also I have noticed if I had vital hit, the hit was registered only partially. At very first, I thought the weapons are extremely low powered, but few days later I realized that the bullet just doesn't hit the target. It's very possible to kill a moose with .243 by one shot but you have to be extremely lucky. I have several pictures where bullet has bybassed spine, heart, lungs and liver. Also I collected some screenshots where the bullet has missed another lung completely. However sometimes if you shoot a bear from behind, the bullet hits to 5 vital parts on row. These are mysterious times indeed.

7mm, .338, or .454 is best way for 1 round kills on moose.

thing is, these russian moose are much different from the alaskan ones, these are much tougher, what we can do with an alaskan moose with a particular round, isnt happening with these.

Russian moose? The ones with new DLC I assume, since I don't have that... Anyway, like I said in one of my previous posts the largest mooses in here "north" weights no more than 700kg and you can bring it down cleanly with .308 in real life. I eat moose's meat every week. :p If they believe mooses are much stronger in Siberia than those which lives in Alaska, the Devs really have no idea... :D Anyway, this was a bit offtopic and sorry for that!

yeah we think its a bug or something with the russian moose, as far at the .338 mag goes anyway. but i would suggest you go to a higher caliber weapon when going after moose, unless you like long walks in nature.

A few days ago while watching a Twitch Streamer play CotW he said something that may explain the differences we're seeing with the Russian boar, bear, and moose, most especially the moose. This streamer said that somehow he had some contact with the Devs and that the Medved Taiga map was meant to be a map for advanced players. The guy could be full of bs but it does go a long way to explaining what we have been seeing on the Russian moose.

The .243 was never meant to be a moose gun in game. It is the starter gun for a reason and meant to be used on small to medium deer and small varmits in game. Certainly you can kill moose with it if you shoot them enough times, take a very skillful shot, or just get lucky.

If you plan on moose hunting regularly I would upgrade to a larger caliber gun. Either the 7mm or .338 for rifles or whatever is top tier in the other weapons.

Do not get attached to any particular weapon in the game, it is all horses for races. Just use what is best to get the job done.

Yeah i left medved and went back to europe, easier prey for now, since my only other unlock is the .223 right now, and im not looking to shooting squirrels.

It really hasn't been brought up, but you mentioned only having the .223 unlocked. If that's the case and you're still using the .243 (which I absolutely love, alongside the .270 and the 7mm), make sure you upgrade to the poly bullets for your .243. It will make a world of a difference if you insist on taking on large game with an underrated gun. I, at first, was skeptical about changing rounds (especially since the .243 softs are free). Do it. They're absolutely worth the money to go with the polys. You will take down way more deer and actually stand a chance with larger game (though, I'd recommend at LEAST a .270 or a 7mm with polys for moose and whatnot--even with these, shot placement and luck are crucial).
