pig hunting
I plan on doing some dedicated pig hunting with the .223 rifle. What do you guys find most effective on pigs the .223 soft points or the polymer tip

Polymer for me but i favor the .270 for boar. That's the way to get100% and instant kills. I like my golds!

I always prefer the polymer, because it has greater penetration. I would use the. 270 too.

polymer and .243 works very ok, if you hit the right spots.
the light calibers are more harder obviously, but that only adds to the game imo.

I highly reccomend the 270 for Wild Boar, a 223 is too weak for those Boars youll be in alot of pain using such a small caliber on a hog..

Thats what I was thinking. With deer I usually go soft point...so I take expansion over penetration and most of the time a 270 soft point will drop a deer pretty fast. Being that pigs are pretty tough I was thinking tthe greater penetration will be better over expansion.

Just so as you get clean kills.... these aren't feral hog/pigs but wild boar. I know .223 is used in the US for feral hog quite a lot but in Europe, for wild boar something more lethal is recommended, eg like in this article from the UK: http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/answers/what-calibre-is-best-for-wild-boar-9042

From the same source: "A certificate to shoot wild boar is only granted for .308 .270 and 30/06 calibre weapons." I know this is the UK not Germany where Hirschfeldt is set but it makes the ame point - .243 and .223 aren't suitable in real life. (And yes, I know it's a game!)

Therefore I'd back those here suggesting .270, and suggest the polymer tip like you said.

Enjoy that hunt!

Well I tried it and concluded that the .223 is the most useless gun in the game. I tried it on pigs and it was like shooting spitballs at at a tank. I then switched to deer, I figured ok it can't take down pigs but pigs are pretty tough as you guys said but it should be able to take down a white tail, in real life people use .223 to take white tail all the time. Aim and fire right at the heart/lungs, it hits and the deer takes off, shoot it again, this time hitting in the stomach, nothing it contnues running, I get one more shot off in it's butt and it continues running. It ran for close to 100 yards before it finally dropped dead. When claiming the kill it confirmed all three shots, right lung, flesh/stomach and tail bone. What a joke this gun is so nerfed it's not funny. It's useless for anything bigger than a fox or coyote. They should up the power or dump the .223 and put a .17hmr in the game instead.

Works ok for Roe deer for me in the game, but again in the UK .223 is not licensed for bigger deer because it isn't deemed powerful enough... it's a varminter not a deer rifle.

its only for Red Fox and Coyote. and its perfect for that, why should they dump the rifle just because you dont get it that you should use specific guns for specific animals, I love the 223 I always carry it for those red Foxes and coyotes I find.. wouldnt leave home without it :)

+1

Sounds to me like someone was given plenty of good advice, ignored it and then wondered why he had little success!

I doubt you would get integrity bonus, on anything bigger than a roe deer anyway :)
