30-30 worth buying? Or 7mm?
I'm still only using the .243, but I've got enough to buy either the 7mm or the 30-30 (but not a scope for either).

I like the idea of the 30-30, as it seems it should work with all the smaller game. Plus I used to have one and it was a monster of a gun, so I'd hope it would help me out with the larger bear/elk/moose that my .243 doesn't do well with.

But, I've read a few recommendations to get the 7mm. I'm at the point that now I need something for the bears and the ocassional elk/moose I come across.

Any help? When I can afford them, I'd eventually like to carry both, with the 30-30 for the deer & coyote and the 7mm for the larger. But right now, which would make more sense do you think?

The 7mm is a good upgrade from the .243, as it will allow you to reliably down elk, moose and bear.

The .30-30 is sort of a side grade to the .243, with slightly more power and a faster reload speed, at the cost of half the effective range as the .243 and a much smaller selection of available scopes for it. It's important to keep in mind that the .30-30 and .45-70 in Call of the Wild aren't nearly as powerful as they are in real life. This is one of my major ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with the game currently, is the state of their cartridges and how they're ranked against one another.

If I were you, I'd put my money towards purchasing the 7mm Magnum and keeping that with me to tackle bigger game, and using the .243 for Blacktail and Whitetail. Save the .30-30 for when you've bought some of the other weapons and have the extra income for it. It's a fun gun to use when your targets will regularly be within 86 yards, but outside that range it starts to suck dirt.

Knowing what I know now I would buy the .270 and roll the left over money into better optics if I was in your situation. The .270 does not hit as hard as the 7mm on snap shots but more than makes up for it in accuracy for long range work when you have time to place that shot just right. It will one shot any animal in the game but bison regularly if you do some homework on where to place your shots and can put the shots there. The ammo is cheaper than 7mm and you can get much faster follow-up shots if you need them.

The problem with using the .270 on bison is the penetration not anything else.

Shoot that lowly .270 till you wear the rifling out of the barrel and you will have the money to buy literally anything you want.

Hummingbird's advice about the 7mm is solid. My preference for the .270 came about when I had to fall back on it when the 7mm and .338 were bugged and not hitting right. Even after that problem got fixed in a patch I found that I prefer the .270.

The 30-30 is a fun rifle to use but it does come up lacking. Hummingbird was dead on about it. Also the scope is just horrid. If you decide to get the 30-30 use the Soft Points for it because of the extra penetration.

I own every firearm in the game and the .270 is my absolute favorite rifle. My prefered hunting loadout is the .270, Pump Shotgun with slugs, and the .357 Mag. Sometimes I switch this up with the .270, .243, and .454 Rhino.

Full ACK, with another fun fact on top ;-) The Lever Action Rifles suck dirt even on close range, when shot placement ist not exactly on the spot. I once tried to kill a fox with the 30-30 from 40 meters away. European Red Fox shot at that distance with hollow point ammo -> should nearly desintegrate in a cloud of fur ! Took me 3 bullets to kill that poor fox, the first 2 where just "flesh and bone" hits.

But that is another problem of this game: Hits that are not in the brain/spine or heart do way to less damage, especialy when hitting limbs the animal is not slowed or immobilized at all.

I was looking at the magnum 7mm for my first paid for gun (I'm on stock gun) but now the .270 is looking very nice, dam it's a hard decision for your first buy lol
7mm all the way one of the best guns in the game.

The 30-30 is my favourite rifle in the game, just don't use the scope there is no point at 86 yard or under which is the effective range of the whitlock and the scope is really dark anyway. 30-30 with scope sucks, but is great with the iron sights. Seeing as you said you wanted to take down bear and moose I would say go with the 7mm, the 30-30 will lack the penetration needed to kill instantly (unless with a spine shot). If you like a challenge though, it can be fun to test your stalking and stealth ability with getting up close and then accurately getting a spine shot on the big game.

I would say get both guns, they are the 2 'best' rifles in the game, but my fondness leans towards the 30-30 more due to the wider range of species you can hunt effectively on. And the ammo is cheap. Go for the 7mm first if big game hunting is what you want to do.

I'd go with the 7mm. And you wouldn't need to buy any other scope for it, you can use the one that came with the 243.

Pro-tip for making that money to buy goodies with.

Buy whichever gun you decide to upgrade to from the starter .243, mine would be the .270 with the 4by8 scope. Fly coach to the European hunting grounds. Stroll north to Red Deer country. Go on a Red Deer murder spree.

Red Deer have the best money payouts of all the non-predator species, they very very seldom like to turn around and stomp you to death, like to travel in large herds, you get to use Odin's Horn to call them up, and have pretty much the highest trophy ratings in the game.

Bonus round is that wild boar are all over Red Deer country. When you are not murdering Red Deer you kill boar. Boar does not pay as much as Red Deer, do not purposely stomp you but if you get caught in front of the initial herd rush will stomp you to death, also like to travel in herds, have the spookyest sounding call in game, and their trophy rating pretty much sucks. They do pay well and are easy to put down, not perfect but it is the bonus round so it is just an extra.

Do this and you will be rolling in that money like Uncle Scrooge McDuck. When you fly back to the States it will be first class, nibbling on caviar, washing it down with Dom Perignon, and with a hottie in your lap.

meh...the coachmate 45-70 is better than the .270

I usually run around with the 30-30, 7mm, and bow. I haven't gotten around to the handguns or shotguns yet. I use the 7mm with the biggest scope and use it for the long range shots on larger animals. Just know that the lever actions use a different type of scope and isn't that interchangable. Had to use iron sights for a while on the 30-30 until I had enough money for the correct scope.

The scope sucks though and makes the guns worse. The lever action guns perform better with the iron sights. Those weapons have an effective range of 86 yards/ 75 metres. No scope is needed. Adding the crappy helios scope makes gun turning slower, reduces peripheral field of view and decreses visibility (very dark lenses). The iron sights are far better, they allow for full field of view, quickest turn speed in case you need to track a fleeing animal and full visibilty. The scope makes you think you can snipe with the 30-30 or the 45-70 simply because you can see them. Shooting at an animal beyond 75m/86yard will lower your penetration (and your bullet probably will not hit the vitals). Increased zoom with the scope is stupid and unnecessary if bullets wont do damage at long range. Iron sights are easy and very accurate at 150m and these guns effective range is half of that.

I have good luck with the scope but do agree with you about the darkess. Maybe it's a combination of the zeroing perk that works well with it. If an animal is within 50m or so I middle mouse click to remove the scope for the iron sights. It is interesting to hear others game play style. I will have to try using it without the scope more.

sad that the lever guns dont have the action animation and sound after reloding in this game- CLİCK CLİCK. to put it simple lever actions dont have a action animation and sound after reloading an empty magazine. :(

Tingting, definately look hard at the .270 or 7mm for your first upgrade from the .243.

I own both and like both.

The .270 is a big upgrade from the .243. The 7mm is a slight upgrade from the .270. Basically with the .270 vs 7mm you are swapping accuracy for power. For the way I play the game I will swap power for accuracy.

You can not go wrong with either the .270 or 7mm for that first upgrade. I just happen to believe the .270 with 4by8 scope is a better buy than just the 7mm for a limited budget.

PS.-

Just had a look in game to make sure of prices.

.270- $12,000
4by8 Scope-$12,000
Total for both- $24,000

7mm- $36,000

Yeah, the .270 with optics is by far the best upgrade for a limited buget. You get a rifle capable of putting down any animal in game but the bison easily, you get upgraded optics for use on any of the rifles, and you save $12,000 to use on that dream rifle to hang on the wall.

Those on a limited budget should be burning up the trails to get to an Outpost to lay their hard earned money down on a .270 with 4by8 scope.

if you play the european map then the best gun is the 270. but if you are playing on the lake map then the 7mm is needed if you dont wanna track elk and moose for too long. ( bison excluded )
