It can have a scope, I believe it's called the helios I believe, the 45-70 can also use it. There's no need to use it though as both those rifles are only intended to be effective up to 75m, beyond that the damage and penetration decreases. The iron sights are much better than the scope for that distance (and the scope is extremely dark).

ah, I didnt realize different scopes were for different weapons exclusively. I thought they were all univeral. But yeah i know its not a long range rifle, I just wasnt sure if it was a bug.

The whitlock and coachmate are very old weapons and are from the times when they didn't have optics so they don't have rails to mount scopes and other attachments on, the Helios scope is specifically designed to fit around the stock of the guns instead of being fixed on the top of the rail.

Scope is very dark:

I wouldn't waste your credits on it, it would be a decent scope on any other rifle that wasn't the whitlock or coachmate but you can only use it on those older rifles. But it makes it feel like you can shoot 200m on those rifles when actually you should be shooting 75m or less for best killing power. A vital shot would be a mere flesh wound at 150m+. And the scope doesn't outperform the iron sights (which are really good on those rifles) at close range either because moving the weapon using the scope is very slow. The 30-30 is my favorite out of all the rifles in the game, you really don't need a scope for the kind of hunting that it does best.

Actually there is a need for it I found out recently, although it IS effective at only 75m, without the scope its considered a shotgun and wont give you rifle score without it.
You get shotgun score for the lever-action rifles whether you equip a scope or not.

Equipping a scope on the .30-30 and .45-70 is certainly optional, but not equipping one cuts your range down by quite a bit, and with a weapon that only has an 86 yard effective range to begin with, you might as well not bother using it.

The shotgun score is a new bug that was introduced a few updates ago, it used to give rifle score like it was supposed to. It will be fixed at some point.

Why would not using a scope cut your range down? It should shoot the same with a scope or without a scope (as long as you can see the target).
The effective range of the rifle stays the same with iron sights as compared to with a scope, but your personal accuracy at ranges over 30~ yards is going to begin to suffer simply as a result of the animal models, the way the iron sights are rendered, and movement of the rifle. It's just not as effective as the scope at distances over 30 yards. Within that distance however, it works just fine like the rest of the rifles.

On the .270 that doesn't have limited range for example, I'm fine with the iron sights and get precise vital shots up to 150m (164 yards), after that I need a scope.

Your mileage may vary.

Actually that rifle chambered 9 long-range rounds. Even the Theodore Roosevelt's short magazine version chambered up to 6 rounds. That weapon was used by the army to get down the German airships in the WWI.
Necroed from May, 2017...

But, since it’s here...

I too wish the 30.30 was a bit more powerful. Maybe like the MN but with the shorter range of the brush guns as they have them setup.
