1) Track 'em down. Investigate the tracks on the ground until you find one that belongs to a male and stalk it.

2) When you see a herd, usually that means a male is somewhere in the neighbourhood. Just be patient and wait them out. They are a bit camera shy, but will come eventually.

3) By chance. Walk around and take notice of the different calls around you. It will tell you if it's a male and from there you can either lure it or stalk it and zero in.

4) Cool you bought the game. Welcome to the hunting club :)

They're definitely there and plenty of them. If you're lucky you might even see them bunched, like these guys.

Best way i have found is the mating calls. Make sure you listen for them, just travel around and you should hear them, then you can sneak up on them.

As with all males...they are much more skittish, and you need to be real slow on the sneak and watch the wind direction.

I think the hunting stands are in the wrong place, because the Roosevelt elks are only walk around the river and this is the only spot you can see them.

The other stand is covert with trees so you can't see the river and on the spot on teh river i only saw females, bears and moose but never a bull...

Hi, this post is rather old, but maybe I can add to the discussion. There are 5 stands in Calburn, where the mission takes place.

I find the southern-most one to be better for this mission. It's located just North of the "Calburn Poem" POI and at roughly the same latitude as the Calburn Outpost, accross the river.

At around midday you get quite a lot of activity, including the odd Elk bull.

My biggest problem finishing this mission (I'm on it now) is that I keep getting distracted by all the other hunting opportunities (Moose and coyotes, mostly) and I'm stupidly ramping up the hunting pressure in the area. Stupid but fun and making money as well!

Ok, as I was writing this I heard a mating call, went back into the game and lured a rather nice 115 trophy-rated bull. 7mm Regent Mag and end of story. On to the next mission!

Good hunting!

That mission kind of sucked. Took me a really long time.

I used the same stand as SniperKiwi (love that nick ;) ) and ended up putting a tent next to it, so I could just fast travel there and check If a bull passed the stand recently.
I found mine at 9:45. The wind is always bad there, so I tried the Wapiti scent, but it didn`t stop him, so better be fast.

17:00 also seems to be a good time. But I would really recommend using a tent to fast travel there frequently.

Elks, moooooooooses, black'n white tail, fallow deer, red deer, they are ALL coward.
While the group with both male and female is moving, females are always in scout position.

While you see a herd of female elk, hold a while and observe the tail of it, there might be some male hiding in the pines.

This post is veryy old but I know I've come back to it twice, once for Xbox and once for PC. It worked great on Xbox a year ago, but on PC none of these times worked for me. If anyone else happens to be struggling, the southernmost stand is still best for quick results.

Just East of the stand was a 04:00-08:30 Roosevelt Elk need zone. Setting up a tent right next to the stand, sleeping until 03:50, and using scents and lures, I ended up having two bull elk cross my path. Unfortunately I have a constant glitch where my elk carcasses disappear and cannot be claimed even if the dog finds it. I shot one at about 150m and it was not an instant kill so it disappeared and sent me into existential pain. But not even 5 minutes after fast traveling back to the stand another bull elk ran right past my stand. With the 7mm and a spine shot I was thankfully able to harvest it.
