If you don't have the perk already, get the FOCUSED SHOT and use the iron sights for a suedo 1-2x instead of using the scope on the 30-30. Since we avoid the scope bug with iron sights, I've been able to quickly get off 4 rounds (if needed) using the iron sights and the perk.
I carry the 243, 30-30, and a bow and still have 5 kg space left in my inventory. I use the 30-30 for close shots below 75m when I can't afford a flesh wound. Players who have success with the 30-30 beyond 150m are players who are good shooters, as for myself, my aiming skill is a little weak so I use the 243 for long range shots (better accuracy) to compensate for my horrible shooting.
The 30-30 came in handy when downing a bison that attacked me, it took 4 shots (iron sights) at close range but it wasn't the shots not doing damage but my horrible aim and the 4th shot was the final "gut breaker". If I was a better shot at rampaging bison (moving target) then I would have downed it in one or two shots .... :/
Bison takes multiple hits from the starter rifle and can kill you while you hit it but its possible to down them with 1 perfect shot in the heart or in the brain using the .243 with polymer tipped ammunition
