I'm having your problem with taking a photo of a Fallow Deer by the lake though. Tons of Roe deer everywhere for me but zero Fallow anywhere near the lake even if I travel fairly far from it can't seem to find any even tried waiting around an entire day/night cycle.
I am looking for a fox sleep zone in Spreeberg. Please post if you find one.
Thanks.
Missions are (supposed to be, assuming no bugs) programmed so that you can complete them, regardless of your game's unique animal population distribution and need zone locations. However, that doesn't mean it will always be easy. I completed this particular mission, but at least there was a fox zone close to the permanent ground blind in that area - as it turned out, waiting to ambush hunt there was not the way I bagged the fox - I had to prowl around away from the zone until I saw a fox heading back in that direction.
In my very first game instance (on PS4), when I went to complete the photographic mission to get a picture of a Fallow Deer by the lake in Petershain, that area had an abundant Fallow Deer population, and a zone between the outpost and the lake - all I had to do was set up a ground blind in a good spot and wait until a deer came along and snap! - got it done.
In the current game I'm playing on my PC, that same area has no Fallow zones, and I was lucky to find even one set of tracks - but it turns out that I could complete the mission simply by taking the photograph of the lake, no deer required. It seems that the programming 'knew that no deer were likely to ever show up' and that it had a plan B (or maybe it was just a bug LOL).
It's the same story for me in the Layton Lakes coyote missions - first game on PS4, there were so many coyotes around that the ACME Company couldn't keep up with the demand for gadgets, Earthquake Pills, paint supplies and TNT (Ha!). In this game (on PC), Layton Lakes has coyotes, but they are hard to come by - I've been able to complete all but two so far, even though the zone distribution is not in my favor (hunt two coyotes from the hiking cabins (I think Chopeka), and hunt a pair (male and female) of coyotes with a bow.
It's taken me months to get this far (not playing LL all the time, though), and I love it -the satisfaction of patience and perseverance when the plan finally comes together can't be overstated.
For those of you who are new and may not know this:
If you are working on an active mission and get stuck on a step (again, assuming no bugs), you can exit the game, re-enter and continue, and the game will 'reset the active mission to the most recent incomplete step', that is, set up the conditions so you can try the step again. In such cases, the way to proceed is to rest until about the same time the next day (so perhaps 23 hours or so) before exiting the game. When you jump back in, one game day has elapsed, so the animals will have gone through one diurnal cycle, and they'll be back. In the case of a mission, the animal that was supposed to be in the area will be spawned in, and you may get a second shot.
In the case of the 'ghost coyote' mission in the area north east of Chopeka Hiking Cabins, I had to do that sequence several times (10, IIRC) before it paid off - I set up a tent near the permanent hunting stand (which I built) and finally was able to get a good shot at the varmint!
Sometimes the game offers you a gimme (and luck), other times you have to make your own luck.
Those coyotes are trained and skilled ninjas and they're a absolute pain and so damn satisfying to finally complete and hunt something else. Felt so liberating. Like a whole part of the game opened up after like 3 IRL days hunting coyotes.
This mission was a lot easier before they increased the spook distance.
