But it doesn't look like a footprint and what does the name mean? Depression?
A depression is a sunken area, where the ground has been pressed down, by the weight of an animal in this case.

With "surface" they mean the surface of the water (where the air 'hits' the water).
Subsurface depression = the mud under the water, footprints in the mud - but under water.

I can't tell you how many times while hunting I have called out " Check out this sub surface depression over here! ;-)
It's a weird track, and honestly it's so niche and you see it so infrequently that it could probably be removed from the game and no one would notice. Typically when you see it, there's other tracks nearby for you to identify.
I actually see it a bunch of times while hunting, it's common
