Tips on gauging long range shots?
Upgrading to the .270, and it's certainly not as flat as the default rifle. Without having a shooting range, I'm at a loss of how to gauge how much drop the rifle has over distance. Anyone care to share how they deal with this?

The devs haven't released any info to me on drop rates for the guns and arrows. What ranges do you normally shoot at?

I have found just trial and error is the best for now, using the .338 is probly the best option , my best accoding to the pick up range was 430 m,yet the range finder binos range was 515m according to range finder binos , it ran of cause , have shot many at that distance , Ron Mctube has a youtub vid on it , he is a master on this , I follwed his way worked well , get up as high as you can ,know where your animls are first, then range them up and try it out was loads of fun and not all that hard, the other was in the lakes map, and shoot accross one of the larger lakes ,watch your wind , that works well to , as at 400 m plus they dontt hear the shots so can have mutly shot's to get your scope set up, was my best option at the time, have not done it since the binos have been fixed or recentered at least, may be the range was fixed as well unsure ! will have to try again and see .

Zeroing Perk allows you to set a short 75m, medium 150m, and long 300m zero. At each setting the bullet should hit where the crosshairs are. I believe the default is 150m if you do not have the perk.

With the .270 when targets are around 250m I set the Zero to 300m. Then shoot a little low for targets under 300m and just shoot higher the futher they are out.

Also when shooting above around 250m I switch out my 4by8 scope for the 8by16. It is my belief that at around 300m the 4by8 scope gets a little wonky. Without an in game range I can not prove it but my long range shooting has gotten much better by doing this.

ive shot about as far as you can shoot and the rifle drop isnt that much at all near enough flat.so unless you shooting over about 450m i wouldnt worry as its so slight.

if you watch my longest shot of 478.5m i aimed for the head and it hit the hind.so not that hard to judge.

You'r in luck!

Shooting into water will give you good feed back. You will notice the guns are extremely accurate, at long ranges. What I have found is that the bullet's loss of force is the biggest obstacle for a quick kill. Using F2-key to quickly switch ammo is good, as soft points are always go to when you are close. Perhaps it is different with bigger game and specific calibers, but I don't have much experience there yet as i enjoy deer.

Anyway, get on a hill and shoot into water.

One thing I forgot to mention is I think there is a bit of RNG in it also. I think how much RNG involved is a combo of the range, the Accuracy rating of the rifle/weapon, and maybe the scope. So with my theory the .223 would have the least RNG with the .338 the most RNG and the closer the targer means less RNG. I could be full of bs on this so do not take it for the Gospel, just remember this is a game and EW has balanced it somehow.

Wind might be involved but I can not remember doing any long range shooting with very high wind. There is a perk involving Wind but it seems like a crap perk so I have never bothered with it.

Ronmctube is right on there being very little bullet drop. When I say shoot just a little bit low or high I really mean just a little bit, I have never used any of the Mil-dots on the scopes they are just to much.

Example. Before I had the Zeroing Perk I spotted a Bullwinkle across a marsh. With the old range finder with the bad reticle it had the range at around +400m. Using the 7mm with 4by8 scope holding it pretty high I took two shots missing both going real high I think. I decided for the third shot to just hold the crosshairs right where Bullwinkle's silhouette met the horizon and it spined shotted him. He dropped like a sack of potatos and when harvested it was a 384m shot.

Thanks, I was wondering about the zeroing perk(skill?) as I had a chance to put a point into it, but wasn't sure about it. So I planned on going into the breathing section.

Just hold on the top of the back (spine) straight up from behind of the shoulder blade...the bullet will find the vitals. If the animal is way out there (350+ yards), hold about 8" above the back.

There's been some conjecture as to whether the zeroing perk is actually working or not, but anecdotally it feels like it is to me. But without a shooting range and a way to eliminate rifle kick it's very difficult to test.

What Hummingbird said about the Zeroing Perk.

There is a way to reduce recoil in the Shotgun tree. It does work, I could tell a difference with just 1 point into it, with 2 points into it I do not lose the target so follow-up shots are good. With the 7mm and .338 you still lose the target because of them being breech loaders. Bolt actions, lever actions, and the shotguns are great with it.

The 7mm works well too , recon the 338 will shoot longer, the smaller cals are harder to get longer shots ,deff more chalanging , worth a go just for the fun of it .
not sure about the zeroing perk ,if it works or not ,still change the distances to be sure though ,did shoot a Roe deer with a .44 hand gun at 278.18 m yesterday, but :> difficulty 1 , trivial ?? I thought it was a great distance and shot 99% kill too seems not !
you can see where your shot went with the 7mm and 338 mm gun by holding the trigger on after teh shot , this has worked for me perviously so u can see where the shot went approx
The .223 and .243 actually have the flattest trajectories in the game, with almost no bullet drop. If the guns work at any way like real life guns do, the heavier the projectile the more drop you'll experience, thus the .338 will have more drop than the .223. Obviously that's over simplified, as you have a LOT of other factors to consider when calculating that sort of thing, but it's a good base point.

To touch on something said earlier, I seem to remember seeing a dev say somewhere that there was no wind drift effect on bullets, only on arrows. I wish I had a source for it, though.

Yes I had found very littel drop in the 7mm & .338 over long distances ,recon Ron Mc tube all so said that too, I think .Will have to give the smaller cals a go at the longer shots and see for myself, yes TLH the 223 and 243 are quite flat in Real life, as for here unsure how the dev's have set there ratings up , some for me are way off from real life experiences i have had with them

In a little bit we will test it at the shooting range.

Already ahead of you on that one. I've been testing it extensively, and it is working.
