Why demo instead of early access for SoR2?
I found the way SoR launched the template for which all games should be released: Early access with the foundation built, every update/balance was done based on constant community feedback, content added consistently never forsaking the foundation, game goes 1.0, game is still constantly fine tuned, and DLC released later for the true believers.

Every day, I do at least a half a run in SoR and I've no doubt SoR2 will exceed expectations. I'm just curious on why Matt chose to launch SoR2 differently, only allowing a test audience and a demo vs extreme early access open to anyone that wants it?

It sounds like you're referring to the period where the game was free prior to its launch into Early Access? The demo will be largely fulfilling that purpose this time around. It'll provide enough content that I'm sure I'll get plenty of good feedback, and allow me to course-correct certain elements of the game before launch. It'll also allow me to show a more-or-less polished section of the game. Since SOR2 is a lot more expansive this time around, if I were to allow the entire world to be available pre-release, I'd be getting lots of bug reports based on things that simply aren't "ready" yet. To me it makes more sense to release a more limited portion of the game for SOR2.

Thanks Matt. You're an incredible developer and I appreciate your consistent attention to feedback. Cannot wait for the demo!
