Fortnight Discussion: Big Quests
By now, you've probably seen that box at the lower-left corner of the character select screen that's said "coming soon" since Alpha 1.

Big Quests are intended to be game-long quests that are unique to each character class. For example:
- The Cop’s Big Quest might be to arrest 50 “Guilty” people throughout the course of the game.
- A Thief might need to steal a hidden, quest-specific trinket from each floor.

I’d like to hear your ideas for Big Quests that could be given to existing character classes.

I would love to see the "Big Quests" have some story to them, and be more than just a regular quest, i.e The Sumo Wrestler's quest could involve a Wrestling/Fighting Tournament on each floor. From most stories ive read, Vampires usually live in clans. Maybe the game long quest for the vampire could be to infiltrate and destroy a rival clan. This would probably involve building a special area and also alot nore time and effort, but i think that would improve the game alot.

My question would be what the rewards for completing a big quest would be? My suggestion however are as follows:
--Vampires having to suck a certain amount of health using their "btte" ability
--Zombie could have the goal of infecting X amount of people
--Soldier... Well I use the soldier to kill everyone on a floor so that could work, maybe the caniable ( my spelling sucks sorry!) could also do that
--The two gang members could also have a mission built in where they are put in the middle of a gang war (The map is mostly filled with the two types of gangs) and must kill ALL the other gang members
--Shop Keeper could be having to make X amount of money
--Investment Banker could be habving to take each type of drug
--Bartender... maybe serving so many drinks? This one seems too easy
--Shapeshifter could have the goal of having to turn into X amount of unique people?
So far this is what I got, I'll suggest more as I come up with them

IMO: big quest could be alternative paths of the main game, or something like killing your past in enter the gungeon. But it's nice in the way are you thinking

Bartender should be the more interesting, because the mayor prohibition rule. He shoud screw the system in all the floors.
Ingame, he shout recruit another bartenders each floor/level. Or do something in the final stage to get an alternative ending

Soldier should do a massive murder based in spec ops: the line(should be a cool reference, and soldier are quitta op).

Hacker should intal viruses in hardwares, until trigger an event that shoud be the big quest x times

Werewolves should destroy x pollution related things/people in a run(werewolf: the apocalypse refference)

this is off topic .
how about having a new disaster called "haunted" and just put some troublemaking ghosts in the level ?

on topic again

a big quest could maybe be about finding a secret undercover agent , a shopkeeper dressed slightly off , a gorilla with a zipper in his "fur" , a police officer without a badge , a cannibal who isnt agressive , a office drone without a tie .
you see these people and go AHA ! shoot (or cuff ) them , receiving a briefcase of information which at the end of the game give you free blow and blowjobs or ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ i dont know.

Definitely not things that are just grindy tasks like most people are posting, I'd rather have something that shows up once every district randomly with a unique setpiece, something large and with some loose narrative and a specific reward including some unique traits.

(suggested reward)
Assassin - Kill a vip connected to the mayor with an accident in his mansion
Bartender - Break into a brewery to steal back some supplies from the mayor's party (beer, whiskey and drugs, trait expert-mixologist, drink maker makes multiple drinks from each effect causing item)
Cannibal/Vampire - Eat/bite the vip to gain his power (stat boost)
Cop - Break into a drug lab or bank robbery and arrest the people involved (money and drugs)
Doctor - Interfere with an arms deal to prevent more powerful weapons from arriving. (money and non-lethal weapons/ weapon mods)
Gang members - Can reuse the drug-lab, bank robbery or arms deal scenarios to disrupt the opposing gang(associted mission items, trait: gang hero, opposing gangsters more likely to run in fear)
Gorilla - Rescue a large group of gorillas from a large science lab (bananas and scientist weapons)
Hacker - Power plant or some other large utility/ killer robot factory (trait: the one, prevents cameras, turrets or robots from attacking)
Jock - Football game, dodge the other team's charges and score a touchdown (item:football helmet, prevents damage during a charge)
Scientist - nature preserve, tranquilize some gorillas to be enslaved for science and makeup testing(resurrection shampoo, trait: domestication, servant gorilla joins you on each floor)
Shapeshifter/slavemaster - Possess/enslave a vip and deliver him to a resistance leader
Shopkeeper/investment banker - stock exchange, knock out another investment banker and deliver his notes to the resistance (trait: investment tips, earn 5% interest on all money at the end of each floor)

Thoughts? I'm quite partial to unlocking unique traits through gameplay. It helps to make weak characters much better as the game goes on.

Personal idea is that there be story objectives for each person that have triggers to unlock. So a doctor needs to go through 2 floors without killing anybody to unlock the next "tier" of story quest, allowing an actual story mission to be issued based on the character. I think, if possible, there would be a single play version and multiplayer version of each quest. The multiplayer would be a generic mission with an added modifier based on the class that unlocked it, so "steal [item] from building", but without killing anyone, so the doctor would be the best candidate to complete the bonus objective, and the single player version would be more involved, like a large hospital facility you have to infaltrate due to them running what is basically a scam with multipul civilan areas and single guards in the restricted area. That way people can get tiered rewards with the biggest reward coming on the 3rd sector at the earliest, and that's if they've been playing perfectly.

As far as story content, I think they should all mix serious backstory with comedic elements.

For the doctor, I think it would the be the story would go on about why he left practice to join the resistance, and showing the deterating condition of healthcare as the mayor scams more and more money from people who need life-saving medicine or operations. And then the way it's implimented is thugs are sent to guard the place, but the actual medical works are trying to help people despite no medical training, not caring what happens as long as they don't spend too much money on it. "well, your side hurts randomly, so I think take some headache medication and it should go away. Your side is basically your head, right? 'cuz you look like a butthead to me." The actual missions would be "civilian stealth" where you blend in with other people until you need to break off to swipe something and knock out a guard or two, with a death clearing everybody out and making the whole complex restricted, but if they are only K.O.ed nobody will raise a fuss. The fanlie would be the doctor finding a book of medical secrets that was kept hidden until the mayor dug them up, and is planning on burrying again after selling a self-help book based on the information contained within.

The hacker would be a story of maturing. He runs through computers only to find that people have their own problems to worry about, and this whole idea of "illumanti and new world order behind the mayor's rise" is just everybody being a bunch of idiots. His missions would basically be "hot spots" where he would need to hack 3 isolated machiens without getting caught to get information off of them for his "NWO" dossier, and selling a copy to a willing byer on the level. They would be in large facitlies where you would always have a tricky way to sneak into one area to get all 3 without getting caught, or a less tricky but more time consuming way to get at each sperately. The finalie would be the hacker finding out a secret about the killer robot's origin and coming to the realization that just because he has all this knowledge dosen't mean the people are ready for all of it at once.

The soldier would be a story about an ace rookie who got kicked out once the mayor was installed for "making the rest of us look bad". He would infiltrate army bases, quite possibly guns ablazing because Chad forgot to bring all the ammo in off the truck so he could go play games, yes every single time it was Chad, due to them holding "prisoners of war" when there clearly isnt' a war going on. More like a disagreement, possibly a scuffle if you could call it that. As he goes on he finds out that all the soldiers are worthless, and the whole "making the rest of us look bad" mentality has left the actual military in poor state as nobody wants to do anything and they don't have anybody better to pick up the slack. the Finalie is the solider fighting his way past soliders who dont' even want to stand up from their chairs to fight back and didn't bring any extra ammo because "it was too heavy", before realizing he just got rid of most of the slackers and vowing to take downt he mayor before more slackers are called in to fill their places.

Now this is much more thought-out and interesting. A lot of the existing quests and missions are mainly just to push the resistance a little more into power and provide inconveniences for the mayor. Most of the big quests should focus more on directly targeting and hitting stuff that would cause more trouble for the mayor, like killing a V.I.P or clearing a drug lab full of the mayor's goons.

Of course there should also be some other big quests that fulfill some of your characters "personal" goals, like cops arresting big baddies or stopping large-scale crimes, for variety.
Bentonk Aug 24, 2017 @ 8:36pm
My question would be about how this would work for custom characters.
Erenussocrates Aug 24, 2017 @ 10:52pm
My idea is that make the big quests very varying. Don't make it so that one class is stuck with one type of big quest everytime they play. And make some of the quests class-neutral, and they should be available to all classes too.
I figured the big quest would be sorta like spelunky where you have to do a specific things to achive a certain end goal for each character, like the theif has to dabble in certain criminalities to find their way to the BIG DIAMOND to steal it in a special level segment, or the cop has to use various contacts and gain favors with undesirables to be able to finally topple some huge criminal empire. Of course that could just be me dreaming.

Zombie : Turn 10-20 enemies into zombies.
Comedian : Gain 10 followers through your jokes.
Blahd : Eliminate 5-10 enemy gang members (and vice versa)
Soldier : Kill 10-20 enemies.
Doctor : Heal 10 patients.
Bartender (or Shopkeeper) : Sell 15 or more items.
