Elsinore

Elsinore

The One Flaw
This game is a masterpiece- I applaud the dev team for the incredible detail to attention, the sheer level of writing and the mapping out of potential branching paths. I think only Hero-U has had this amount of writing and accounting for different outcomes in the games I have recently played.

That being said, I do want to weigh in on something... and I know it probably is an artistic choice: The fact that, once we choose an ending, our save games are deleted and, should we wish to visit the other endings, we must start from the Prologue with a completely blank slate.

From the artistic point of view, I can see how it underscores the entire notion of choice and its finality, and that is probably what the team is going for. But, from the viewpoint of the player there is a certain level of tedium involved that even the excellent writing may not be enough to overcome. It took me about 20 hours to get all but one ending (and not counting the final ending which I did not choose to pursue this time)- and while a second run-through wouldn't take as long, it will still take a while because Ophelia has to re-learn things that we already know as the player, and she still does not get the ability to choose endings out of the book until a little ways in.

Considering that there are twelve endings in total, that's... still a lot of backtracking. Perhaps you might consider allowing the player to return to a certain spot in the game- for example, from a separate save spot when a *certain* ability is given to Ophelia, or from the moment the book is given to her.

It's just a suggestion. As it stands, the thought of starting anew without being able to go to a specific save game means I may not replay Elsinore, or if I do it won't be for a while due to time constraints. I hope you take into consideration this suggestion for players who do not have as much free time as students or younger players.

All that being said- Elsinore is beautiful, and Ophelia is a wonderful protagonist.

This was a pain point for me as well. To work around it, I chose to backup my save file before selecting endings to retain my progress for each ending and just reload the old save file each time.

I didn't even think of that... where is the save file stored? When I chose my ending, it was rather late and I may have been a little sleep deprived (because I couldn't stop playing)

Mine was found here:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Golden Glitch Studios\Elsinore
Thank you!

I agree wholeheartedly. I had a blast finding all the endings, but I do wish I could easily go back and view all of the epilogues. Or at least to be able to skip dialogues and the intro!

I have no idea how to access this on my Steam application. I tried "backing up" the game on Steam and on my Mac, and I tried searching for this url, but I can't figure out how to save the game. (I downloaded Steam in order to play Elsinore a few weeks ago and still don't quite know how it works.)

I read through the adventuregamers.com review and was thinking this sounds great, but then I reached the warning about the game's erasing your save game to make you start completely over to see different endings and said NO WAY. That's just a terrible, game-breaking design decision.

WARNING, making a backup DOES NOT WORK on the latest version (it ignores the existing save and makes you play from the start again), at least on linux. It might also be because I didn't save the last-modified times of the files.

Did some more sleuthing, the problem was Steam Cloud saves. It was deleting the file because it was recorded in Steam Cloud that I didn't have an existing save.

If this is happening, you can spot it by looking in <Steam install dir>/logs/cloud_log.txt (at least, that's where it is on linux) and spotting this line: Need to locally delete file Golden Glitch Studios/Elsinore/game.save

I've come to bring you great news, although late, I know this thread was posted on 2019, and I am aware of "necroing threads". I don't intend to do much here other than provide answers to other players who may share this sentiment or seek advice.

First of all, by "12 endings" , you either mean 1 of 2 things, because there's 13 endings and I believe the 2 outside book of fates are "somewhat secret" since you won't normally realize the existence of them:

1. 11 Endings from book of fate + "Exeunt All". I don't know how to achieve this ending yet and I'm dying to have someone tell me. edit: i got it, nvm
2. 11 Endings from book of fate + "Burn the book" (Sacrifice Choice for Revenge), can be done by clicking the candle on bottom right corner of the book of fate when opened. in order to obtain -> Requires you to talk to the ghost and hamlet about banishing the playmaster, i think

I've stumbled upon a heavenly, divine youtube video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP4IczoHEJk

whichever endings you do not know of, you can, then, NOT watch that part on the youtube video (timestamps for which endings start when, are in the description).

now, if you do want to see Exeunt All / Burn the Book ending, you only need to play once or two more times for those :p since the 11 book of fate "ending-narration-sequence" literally start once you pick a fate + cement your fate, nothing is lost (by that i mean, your experience with the plot) when you simply watch a video of the ending-narration, provided you have unlocked it in your book of fate. So there's no need to replay the game for 11 book of fate endings.

However, I think "Burn the Book" or "Exeunt All" is worth it to be experienced in-game for real, since the video does not show the "gameplay parts" that happen before the ending, which I think, is quite critical to the plot, since I'm sure Quince will talk more with you on both of these occasions. I myself, as of writing this, have played through the game once to cement my fate, and then played a 2nd to choose "burn the book", which is somewhat-a-secret-ending and I wouldn't want people to watch it on video. I don't know what "exeunt all" ending is like or how to achieve it as of yet, but i believe both of those endings are better played through than watched.

further more, in my quest to see these "secret endings" and how to obtain them, which is hard to come by provided there's only one, not-so-good-but-good-enough guide existing on Elsinore currently, and such a small fanbase Elsinore has for the current time, I stumbled upon a steam thread, a little older than this thread, where someone attempts a speedrun of Elsinore.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl2H5gitZ_M

Now, the important thing is this. you can obtain the book of fates in less than 1 hour from a blank slate . I myself have tried to replay the game BEFORE watching this speedrun and I still do things inefficiently, it took me around 4 hours to "get the leads" to finally "get things in motion" in order to get the book of fates again. This video, i believe, would GREATLY help incentivize you, or other players, to Experience "Burn the Book" or "Exeunt All" endings on your/their own, since it only takes a measly 2 hours compared to your first playthrough time, 20 hours. I myself, took 20 hours on my first playthrough time since I tried to get to the bottom of all leads, get all fates unlocked on book of fates. I am both relieved and sorry that another player took 20 hours too, probably doing the same thing I did, which is a gamer's nature.

on the second video's description, there is a link to Pastebin, a site for notes basically, which provides the rundown on what to do and when. Edit: link here https://pastebin.com/LRGKawFZ . Alternatively, just watch the speedrun and do what they do. I myself haven't tried the speedrun to "get-the-book-of-fates-in-less-than-an-hour", but I believe in it, because = https://steamcommunity.com/app/512890/discussions/0/1606022547904296852/

there's the link for the thread. The developer confirmed it's a great attempt, and can even be more efficient than 40 minutes. without watching the video, then, only by reading the Pastebin and knowing the developers commented on it, I believe that you WILL be able to get the book of fates in under 40 minutes.

You're welcome :necroheart:
