D: The Game

Anyone know how to get rid of the Black scanlines?
So, whenever there is an fmv (the entire game, basically) there are these dark black scanlines. Anyone know how to get rid of them?

I too would like to know if this is possible.

The game is so old...back in the days they used these scanlines to save valuable space on the CD-ROM and/or HD.
My hypothesis:
The only way of removing them would be to contact the "developer" to see if he still has the raw data, and then it would have to be converted and/or implemented into the game.
The chances of this happening are close to 0.

Greetings,
sePL

edit: Wow, some valuable info is posted further down this thread.

Unfortunately WARP died. Maybe an alternative is to take the videos from the console versions and replace the videos in the DOS one. I tred to get this game yesterday but GOG wouldn't accept my gift card cause their banks are in Poland.

Just so you know, you can grab a video editor (that can open the game files), deinterlace them (with a double line filter) and replace the original files.

This process was done to Red Alert 1 cutscenes, they look very good without the crappy ancient compression method.

Do the console versions have actual better quality videos or they are just using the same videos but with a double line filter (or similar) applied to them?

Hi, I made this video to compare different versions of D (PSX and DOSBox using different shaders). I don’t know if PC version was worse or is a DOSBox problem.
I use this guide for fixvideo.fx shader: https://www.gog.com/forum/phantasmagoria_series/workaround_for_black_scanlines_in_phantasmagoria_2
I would love to be able to play this game with the best performance. I know it’s old, but at least I would hope like in PSX.

Wow this needs to be pinned for real. It's a step in the right direction. Works and makes me not want to get a refund lol. I played it back on the psx with CRT monitor, obviously gunna look like crap on an hd monitor. I was almost tempted to return this gem because it looks god awful without the right filtering. This is the hot fix we needed, thank you!

I'm glad to read that. In the end I wasted more time looking for a better shader than playing the game... It’s so short! But it was worth it. It’s a beautiful game ;)=

I wonder if its easy or not to extract the cutscenes from the PS1 disc...

They seem to be the best quality videos from the game.

I was wondering that myself. Would be a good way to get a definitive edition out of D.

If I come across anything to make the game better, Ill definately give yall a shout. Remember playing this with my uncles very first Playstation.

Any of yall remember Mortal Kombat Trilogy? I want that on steam so bad, so many memories on the original Playstation.

One can use the tools here:
https://www.zophar.net/utilities/psxutil.html

Specially PSXMC, to convert the files from D, if they are easily acessible from the CD.

Once again, the folks behind the many C&C Red Alert 1 patches did a similar job to get the PS1 exclusive cutscenes on PC.

It's called Interlacing and it's brought back immediate feelings of joy and nostalgia circa Heroes of Might and Magic 1 & 2. I will never rid of it. It;s from an era when your PC had less graphics power than a flip phone. Pre AGP.
