How did Lionel's characters become sentient?

My first though was Gamefuna and/or Gameworks, but he made Reggie before either were involved, so it couldn't be them. The only other thing I could think of is that Lionel's grandpa accidently exposed him to the Old Data while he was smuggling it from Russia, but that seems unlikely, as why would he keep it anywhere near his son?

If you play the secret ending Lionel mentioned about Gameworks forums spreading rumors' that character are sentient. so it seem Old_Data isn't really the culprit but it have something to do with the Gameworks.

After thinking this thru I might have understand what is really going on with inscription.
