I wanted to write this before the 1.0 version of the game releases, so here it is; this game is if borderlands and a random extraction shooter had a hate child that grew up to be better then both of them. the soundtrack, the weapons, the employees, are all what makes this game a astonishing piece of work, and it hurts to see that it isn't being praised more. hopefully that will change with the 1.0 update but as for now the characters and the world are so enticing. i bought Mycopunk when it first came out in early access, and i played it before that when it was available for the next fest. every update has been worth the wait, and with the discord they have it makes you fell like you are a part of the community more, but since this is a game that has you constantly getting stronger and stronger it gets a bit stale after a wile. but the devs have promised to fix this in the new update so hopefully they are correct. another criticism i have is that some of the weapons just feel boring to use sometimes, or not even worth it to use, the cycler and jackrabit being most of the problem for me, having an active xp system in game would also be nice to have. but with all that being said i cant wait to see what is next for this game.
Thank you Pigeons at Play
Thank you devolver digital

Fixes virtually every issue I have with other similar games while feeling distinctly like its own thing.

Every other looter shooter I've played is very concerned about not letting the player have too much power. Not the case here. There's not a massive abundance of guns like destiny or borderlands, but there's a good variety of weapons that handle distinctly. The weapon mod system also allows you to pretty drastically alter how they feel. I also am compelled to theory craft and find new ways to break the game because (unlike destiny) the devs aren't deciding which build will be the best for the current patch. This is genuinely the first looter shooter I've played to deliver on the promise of "diablo with guns." There is many ways to make an OP character without chasing some kind of meta.

It side steps a lot of the grindy feeling that other games in the genre have because it's not particularly picky about how you progress. The mission objectives are very much in the vein of something like deep rock or helldivers but the game doesn't push you too hard to play one type of mission over another. Grinding the mission chain things in deep rock just to get an unlock that felt mediocre sapped any and all energy I had to play that game after a while. The backlog system in this game allows you to give yourself that kind of structure if you crave it, but you ultimately have control over what you choose to do. You progress by getting mods for your gear and all of the activities give you mods for your gear.

A thing I've come to really despise in all of these post left 4 dead co op shooters is the rigid class systems. I constantly feel like I'm being forced to give up some invaluable piece of kit in order to fit some kind of team composition. In practice if you're playing with randoms it makes it harder to step up and cover areas they may be lacking in, and it also usually makes solo play pretty miserable. This one being class based nearly put me off of it, but I actually like what they did here. The weapons are not class locked which instantly makes the whole system way more tolerable. You don't have to play the cowboy character to have a revolver. The class abilities don't fit neatly into archetypes either. You can build them to fulfill whatever type of role you want. It plays well solo too.

The enemies are pretty interesting. They didn't just copy paste the specials from left 4 dead. There's definitely enemy types, but there's a lot less emphasis placed on this than you're probably used to. The enemies are modular and when you kill one the parts they dropped can be picked up and used to attack you by other enemies. I thought it was really easy for the first few missions as I was unlocking the higher difficulties, but it's not balanced around the difficulty of the individual enemies. This game has helldivers style hordes that feel very chaotic and alive when you're fighting them. The difficulty comes from trying to manage the horde. That always feels different because your objectives change depending on the mission, and the makeup of the horde its self changes as you fight it. It's really pretty unique and works extremely well with this games systems. You'll get more powerful and you will have the power fantasy/diablo style moments of making your whole screen explode, but the game never becomes a cakewalk.

I don't like roguelikes, but this game also has an excellent roguelike mode. It gives you a fresh character and gives you new mods after every encounter. It gets progressively harder and there's modifiers. It's typical roguelike stuff. All of the systems the game is built on are so well put together that I actually had a ton of fun playing it though. It feels like previewing what types of builds I can make in the other parts of the game, in addition to stress testing whatever I come up with on the fly. It also gives you a way to unlock the mods that you got in the roguelike mode for your main characters, so its a really solid way to progress overall.

It runs great. Art style isn't for everyone. I thought it looked kind of ugly in videos but it grew on me while I played. The music is good. Shooting things feels good. Tone is comedic, but it's pretty lightly implemented and not an overbearing assault on the senses like borderlands. There's a good hub for when you're between missions. It doesn't inundate you with tutorials. Everything feels good. I can't believe I had never heard of this prior to its full release on my steam release calendar thingy. It's also absolutely absurd that you can't find a youtube video on it from less than 10 months ago. At the time of writing there's 1 video on it from a day ago and it's AI generated. This feels like the kind of thing that should be way bigger than it is.

All in all, this is the first game of it's type that doesn't feel like it's constantly trying to hold me back from the fun part. 15 bucks is generous and 7 is highway robbery. Highly recommend.

I'm kinda mixed on this one.
Don't get me wrong, the foundation is really solid, artstyle is fun, weapon upgrade system is amazing, but I really feel like there's something... missing from the gameplay.

Whenever you drop into the mission, you can solve every fight in the same way, by strafing side to side and firing at the enemies (the larger ones being too damage-spongy for my taste too). I don't feel like I'm making any moment-to-moment choices in the game, I'm just mindlessly strafing until the enemy dies and I can progress the objective.

I can appreciate the love being put into the game, which there was definitely plenty of, with numerous impressive updates since I bought it, but the special something that would make me think during missions is still not there yet.

Also not a huge fan of the dialogue writing, though it wouldn't affect my review with how easy they are to turn off. The VAs did amazing with what they had, but I don't like how Marvel-like and repetitive it feels.
