Edit: Alright! I've concocted a winning strategy. Barring the usual god-powers strat, I'll tell you what I did.
I started off by reinforcing the defenses in the center of the circle. Near the Boxer you need to protect, I placed another Boxer and a Wizard.
Then, on the left side of the circle, I placed three Poachers, while on the right I placed three Blowdarters (try to space them out, but make sure they're not too close to the Miners). Then, in front of the enemy Miners, I placed Peasants. I was able to afford two Peasants in front of two of the enemy columns, and one Peasant each in front of the other two. When I was done, I only had 20 Gold left.
The gist of this strat was to kill the Gunslingers immediately, since they can one-shot our Boxer. I started off by possessing a Poacher (the Blowdarters usually have a good chance of killing at least one of their Gunslingers by themselves) and trying to shoot a Gunslinger. The Poachers will die quickly to the first salvo, so be quick and cut your losses if they miss.
If stuff goes well, 1-2 Gunslingers should be dead, or you should at least have a lot of units. If not, try to restart the battle. The next part is the most important: Possess the Wizard, and immediately take out the Gunslinger closest to the Boxers (on the right, in my case). If both Gunslingers are still alive on the side your Boxer charges, the Boxer WILL die. Make sure to kill at least one Gunslinger before getting here.
Now, you should have the two Boxers and Wizard on the right of the field, which should mostly be cleared out of enemies. The next part of the fight relies mainly on the Boxers being able to kill the Miners by themselves. It took me two tries, but I found that the Boxers can hold off the Miners pretty reliably without dying themselves.
While the Boxers and Miners are fighting, it's up to you, the Wizard, to take out the other Gunslingers. Make sure to get close up to them, since you can tank a couple of their hits, and they can kill all your Units easily. Use your sword, too, if you can, but you probably won't get up close enough to do so.
If both Gunslingers are dead and your Boxers are still alive, there should only be 2-3 Miners left on the field. Your Boxers will be pretty low, so make sure to help them out with the Wizard's spells.
And that's what I did! If I was a little unclear in explaining some bits of it, I hope you got the general gist. Good luck with this level!
Not sure why that would be the case, possibly your playing an earlier version?
I start the battle as well with 2650 gold, and I've found that it is enough to buy:
1x Wizard
1x Boxer
3x Poachers
2x Blowdarters
and 6x Peasants
Getting all those units should leave you with exactly 20 gold. Perhaps you placed an extra of another unit by accident?
